不思議の国のアリス｜翻訳01（第1章　うさぎの穴に落ちる①）

・はじめに
英文がスッと読めるようになりたくて、不思議の国のアリスで英語勉強を始めました。頭の中を整理するための訳なので、直訳ぎみで日本語がおかしい箇所があります。

Chapter I
DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE（うさぎの穴に落ちる①）

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversations?”

アリスはお姉さんと川沿いで座っていたが、とても退屈してきた。何もすることがなかったからだ。
1，2ページほどお姉さんが読んでいる本をのぞき見してみたが、そこには絵も会話もなかった。
「この本は何に使うのかしら？絵も会話もないのに？」とアリスは思った。

・peeped（のぞき見）

So she was considering, in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

なので彼女は頭の中で考えていた。（とても暑い日で頭がボーっとしていたけど一生懸命に）
ヒナギクの花輪を作るのは楽しいだろうけど、起き上がって花を摘むまでする価値はあるだろうか。
その時である。突然ピンクの目をした白いうさぎがアリスのすぐ近くを走った。

There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and, burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

それはそんなに驚くべきことではなかったし、「大変だ！大変だ！遅刻しちゃう！」とうさぎの独り言が聞こえても、そんなに異常なことだと思わなかった。（後でよく考えた時、そのことについて驚くべきだったと気がついた。だけどその時はそれがとても自然に見えたのだ）だが、うさぎは実際にチョッキのポケットから時計を出して確認すると急いでいた。それを見たアリスは飛び上がった。チョッキを着て時計を取り出すうさぎなんて今まで見たことがないことを思い出したのだ。好奇心に火がついたアリスは野原を横切ってうさぎを追いかけた。ちょうど追い付いた時には生垣の下の大きなうさぎの穴へピョンッと降りて行ってしまった。

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

次の瞬間にはアリスも後に続いて降りていった。再びこの世界に戻ってこられるかどうかは一度も考えていなかった。

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down what seemed to be a very deep well.

そのうさぎの穴はどこまでも続くトンネルのようになっていて、真っすぐ降りていったが（onは続いている→went on）、突然、急降下した。
あまりにも突然のことだったので、止めようと考える間もなく、とても深い井戸に落ちてしまったと後で気づいた。

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her, and to wonder what was going to happen next.

井戸がとても深いのか、とてもゆっくり落下しているのか、アリスが落ちている間、周りを見る時間はたっぷりあった。次はどんな不思議なことが起ころうとしているのだろう。

First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything: then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves: here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed: it was labelled “ORANGE MARMALADE,” but to her great disappointment it was empty; she did not like to drop the jar, for fear of killing somebody underneath, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it.

まずアリスは、この先何が待っているのかを確認するために下を見てみることにした。しかし暗すぎて何も見えなかった。それから井戸の横を見ると、そこは食器棚と本棚でいっぱいで、あちこちに地図や絵がかけられていた。
アリスは通りすがりに棚からビンを手に取った。そのビンのラベルには「オレンジマーマレード」とあったが中身が空だったのでとてもがっかりした。ビンを落としたら下にいる誰かを殺してしまうと思ったので、落ちながらも食器棚に戻した。

• took down（take down、下げる、降ろす、飲み下す、記録する、コンテンツなどを削除する、停止させる）
• jar（ビン、かめ）
• disappointment（失望、期待外れ、がっかり）
• empty（中身のない、空の）
• fear（恐れ、不安、心配、気遣い、可能性）
• underneath（アンダーニス、下に、底に、心の底では、根は）

“Well!” thought Alice to herself. “After such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling down-stairs! How brave they’ll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn’t say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!” (Which was very likely true.)

「さて！」とアリス。「あんなに（such）落ちた後なら、もう階段から転がり落ちるなんて何とも思わない！家に帰ったら私がどれだけ勇敢か、みんなが思うでしょうね！ええ（why）、たとえ私が家のてっぺんから落ちたって何も言わないはずよ！」（どっちもその通りになる可能性が高かった→※パブリック翻訳版では「そりゃあそのとおりでしょうけど」）

Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end? “I wonder how many miles I’ve fallen by this time?” she said aloud. “I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think—” (for, you see, Alice had learnt several things of this sort in her lessons in the school-room, and though this was not a very good opportunity for showing off her knowledge, as there was no one to listen to her, still it was good practice to say it over) “—yes, that’s about the right distance—but then I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I’ve got to?” (Alice had no idea what Latitude was, or Longitude either, but thought they were nice grand words to say.)

下へずっと落ちていく。終わりは来るのだろうか？
「今のところどのくらいの距離を落ちているのかしら？」アリスは周囲に言った。
「地球の中心に着いてしまうわ！4000マイルくらい落ちたと思うの・・・」

Presently she began again. “I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth! How funny it’ll seem to come out among the people that walk with their heads downwards! The antipathies, I think—” (she was rather glad there was no one listening, this time, as it didn’t sound at all the right word) “—but I shall have to ask them what the name of the country is, you know. Please, Ma’am, is this New Zealand? Or Australia?” (and she tried to curtsey as she spoke—fancy, curtseying as you’re falling through the air! Do you think you could manage it?) “And what an ignorant little girl she’ll think me for asking! No, it’ll never do to ask: perhaps I shall see it written up somewhere.”

すぐにアリスはまた独り言を言い始めた。
「もしかしてこの地球の終わりまでずっと落ち続けることになるの！？下に出て人が逆さまに歩いてたら面白いわ！その嫌悪（antipathies）は、あー―」（間違った言葉を言ってしまって、今回は誰もいないことにむしろ喜んだ。→※対蹠地（antipodes）といいたかった）

「だけど、その人たちに国の名前を尋ねるべきかしら？あなたはご存じでしょうがお願いです、マダム、ここはニュージーランドでしょうか。オーストラリアでしょうか？」（アリスは話しながらおじぎをして―考えてみて、落ちながら空中でおじぎをするなんて！あなたはそんなこと考えたことある？）

「マダムは『なんておバカな小さな女の子なんでしょう！』と考えるかしら。そんなのダメよ。尋ねることはやめて、どこかに書いてあるもの（※看板とか）を見るほうがいいわ」

Down, down, down. There was nothing else to do, so Alice soon began talking again. “Dinah’ll miss me very much to-night, I should think!” (Dinah was the cat.) “I hope they’ll remember her saucer of milk at tea-time.

もっと下へ落ちていく。他に何もすることがなかったので、アリスはまたすぐに話し始めた。
「ダイナは今夜とても寂しがるでしょうね。考えるべきだったわ！」

「私の可愛いダイナ！一緒に落ちればよかった！この空中にはねずみはいなくて残念だけど、コウモリを捕まえてくれるかもしれないわね。ネズミに似てるもの、でしょ？だけど猫はコウモリを食べるのかしら？」

And here Alice began to get rather sleepy, and went on saying to herself, in a dreamy sort of way, “Do cats eat bats? Do cats eat bats?”

そんなことを言っているうちに、アリスはとても眠くなってきた。独り言を続けていたが、だんだんぼんやりしながら、

She felt that she was dozing off, and had just begun to dream that she was walking hand in hand with Dinah, and was saying to her, very earnestly, “Now, Dinah, tell me the truth: did you ever eat a bat?” when suddenly, thump! thump! down she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall was over.

そして時々「コウモリは猫を食べるの？」あなたは分かると思うが、アリスはどちらの問いにも答えることができなかった。どちらに言葉を置こうが（※言葉の並びが間違ってても）大した問題ではなかった。アリスは居眠りし始め、ダイナと手をつないで歩く夢を見た。アリスはとても真剣に言った。
「さあダイナ、本当のことを教えて頂戴。あなたは今までコウモリを食べたことあるの？」
その時突然、ドスン！ドスン！アリスは小枝と枯れ葉の山の上に落ちた。落下の終わりがきたようだった。

Alice was not a bit hurt, and she jumped up on to her feet in a moment: she looked up, but it was all dark overhead: before her was another long passage, and the White Rabbit was still in sight, hurrying down it.

アリスは無傷だったのですぐに飛び起きた。見上げてみると頭上には暗闇が広がっていた。前方には長い廊下が続いていて、まだ白いうさぎが急いでいるのが見えた。（※この場合のdownは道や通路などをまっすぐ行くという時のdown）

There was not a moment to be lost: away went Alice like the wind, and was just in time to hear it say, as it turned a corner, “Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it’s getting!” She was close behind it when she turned the corner, but the Rabbit was no longer to be seen: she found herself in a long, low hall, which was lit up by a row of lamps hanging from the roof.

見失ってしまわないようにアリスは風のように駆けて追いかけると、ちょうど曲がり角にいたうさぎが何か言い始めた。
「ああ、私の耳とおひげちゃん、もうこんな時間だ！」
うさぎのすぐ後ろにいたはずが角を曲がると、すでに見えなくなっていた。ここは低い長い広間で、天井にはランプが一列に吊り下がっていた。
