Details emerge about vaccine side effects

People around the world are putting their faith in vaccines to bring the coronavirus pandemic to an end. With vaccinations underway in many countries, more and more data are coming in on their effectiveness and side effects. Israel is inoculating its people faster than any other country. About 30 percent of the population had been vaccinated by Saturday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "There'll be more mutations in the future, means that we'll have to race as fast as we can to vaccinate." The majority have received a vaccine developed by the US pharmaceutical company, Pfizer. Data from the government show only about a quarter of one percent of people who received the first shot experienced side effects. Just slightly more suffered side effects after the second shot. In most cases, the effects were temporary pain or swelling. But some were more serious. For the initial shots, 17 people out of a million needed to be hospitalized. Researchers at Oxford University say a vaccine developed by their colleagues along with the UK pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca was 76 percent effective three months after the first dose. But some European countries are cautious. Dominique Le Guludec, president of French National Authority for Health, said, "There's a shortage of data for people aged 65 or older. We advise health authorities only to use it for people younger than 65." Sweden and Germany have issued similar advisories. Germany has decided not to use the vaccine for its elderly people. But the UK is going ahead with it for its senior citizens. In Italy, a panel of experts has also advised the government to use it for the elderly.
Japan is moving forward with a schedule to start vaccinations by mid-February. A firm in Osaka Prefecture, western Japan, has begun preparing to build and rent out a site for vaccinations. A simulation was held on Wednesday. The temporary venue has a waiting area and other facilities in line with health ministry guidelines. Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University show global infections had surpassed 103 million on Wednesday.
The number of deaths stands at over 2.2 million.
