Japanese students love rice 日本人学生はごはんが好き
In the past we have found that when students complain about food it is usually that they miss eating rice, and that having sandwiches most of the time is not really their preference. Sandwiches are fine sometimes, but they are more accustomed to eating hot meals. When possible we suggest making extra portions at suppertime to be used as the next day's lunch, which they can heat up at school.
One of the easiest, cheapest and most effective things to do is to make rice for your students. For such a simple dish, it is a big deal.
We use a rice cooker at home, which is automated and very easy to operate, however, on the stove-top, in a pot, is very simple too. We recommend buying Japanese short rice (Kokuho) for curry, Onigiri and rice balls (below). Just in case if you serve rice, such like “ Jasmine or Basmati rice” sorry to say … The taste and texture are completely different, and but most Japanese students don’t like it.
Japanese loves short rice 🍙
It may not seem very appetizing to Canadians, but Japanese students often eat rice balls as part of their lunch, and love it. You can find an easy recipe below - basically it is just rice wrapped in seaweed.
Some other popular ideas are white bread (not brown for some reason), noodles (even good quality cup noodles), stir-frys, teriyaki chicken, curry w/rice, miso soup (super easy and delicious). Also popular are Italian foods like pasta, meatballs, pizza, lasagna, along with western fare like hamburgers, omelets, BBQs, fish (salmon is great).
We have linked to a few cooking videos below that we hope will help. Maybe your students can get involved with the process? Please let us know how it goes.
