A Gentleman and a Girl

Last Sunday, I saw a neat elderly man standing on the train, holding hands with a girl about 8 years of age. He repeatedly told her gently how many more stations there were to Hongo-sanchome Station. Judging by his appearance dressed in a sophisticated gray suit and tie, he was probably a professor, and she might have been his granddaughter. Their stop was near the University of Tokyo. Some academic conference or public event might have been held there, and he was likely to attend it with his beloved granddaughter. I felt comfortable listening to their conversation, and hoped they would have a good day.
