Smartphone 3D Scan vs. iris Full Body 3D Scan Comparison

Recently, iPhone 3D scanning apps have become usable even at production levels. At iris, we also use iPhone apps like Scaniverse and Polycam as alternatives for quick notes and simple measurements at offsite locations or shooting sites.

Especially in field situations, iPhone 3D scanning apps are convenient for snapshot-like measurements. Lately, production teams have been increasingly using preliminary scans and preliminary 3D models created with iPhone 3D scans for previsualization, followed by the official full-body scans at iris.

3D Scan Comparison

Let's make a comparison right away. Here are the unedited raw outputs from the scans, in order from left to right:

The results from all three can be viewed in 3D on a web browser.

This concludes our comparison of the three types of scans.
The accuracy of iPhone 3D scans has improved remarkably when compared to 3D scanning systems from about ten years ago.

Comparison of iPhone Scan and Full Body 3D Scan by iris

With iPhone scans and handheld scans, the unavoidable "body sway" affects the scan quality, particularly reducing the clarity due to movement. This is most noticeable at the extremities of the body such as the "head," "eye positions," and "fingertips," which are prone to significant distortions.

Basic Style of iPhone / Handheld Scanning

If a rig is used, the subject is positioned in an A-pose with support like a tripod for the hands. This setup can help the subject remain still for about a minute, minimizing blurring as much as possible.

The 3D scanning at Iris utilizes a strobe flash that captures images in an instant, faster than 1/350th of a second. This allows for capturing sharp details without motion blur, even during quick movements.

iris utilizes high-speed strobe flashes to capture images. This brief flash allows not only for static poses to be scanned but also enables capturing a "moment" in the midst of movement.

This workflow optimizes time and resources by initially using less precise but quicker iPhone scans for layout and previsualization, followed by high-quality Iris scans for final production.

Recommended Production Workflow(3D Scan asset use)

  1. Test Scan with iPhone 3D Scanning App

    • Quickly capture initial data to evaluate the subject and settings.

  2. Create a Preliminary Model

    • Use the initial scan to build a rough 3D model for layout and previsualization.

  3. Layout and Previsualization Production

    • Design the scene layout and create animations or simulations for initial viewing.

  4. Client Approval of Previs Offline

    • Present the previsualization to the client for feedback and approval before proceeding with detailed scanning.

  5. Perform Necessary Poses with iris for 3D Scanning

    • Once the rough concept is approved, use iris to capture the required poses with high precision and detail.

  6. Create Retopologized Models and Materials from 3D Scan Data

    • Process the high-quality scan data to create detailed models and materials suitable for final production.

  7. Pre-render and Online Work

    • Perform detailed rendering tests and finalize the project with any required online adjustments or collaborations.

  8. Completion!

    • Finalize the project for delivery after all elements meet the production standards and client expectations.

In practical settings, a rough scan is done with Scaniverse within one minute—the threshold before pose distortions become significant. This is followed by the final scan with iris, and then the data is adjusted and aligned during the sculpting process. This workflow proves to be efficient.

We also plan to create an article comparing difficult poses that cannot be held still.
