私が買ったもの　：　その１３　外部ディスプレイ

今、自宅で仕事をするとき、勤め先から持ち出し許可を得たノートＰＣに、自前の外部ディスプレイをつないでいます。出勤時も、そのようにPCに外部ディスプレイをつないで作業しているのですが、やはり便利です。ノートＰＣの画面では複数のファイルやＷＥＢ画面を見るとき、いちいちAltキーとTabキーを同時に押して切り替えないといけません。そういう操作をせずに、視線を動かすだけで見比べたり、コピーしたりできるのです。
子供の勉強机を使わせてもらっていて、 置き場所に余裕は無いですが、ダイニングテーブルに置いたノートＰＣだけで作業している同僚に比べると、恵まれています。
私が買った外部ディスプレイは、EIZO FlexScan 23.0インチ EV2336W-ZBKです、これは２０１４年３月に買いました。消費税が５％から８％に上がる前に買ったのです。消費税が上がる前に買っておかないといけない、と思ったのです。とはいえ、去年までは、たまに使う程度でした。在宅勤務が始まった今では、重宝しています。
この機器のいいところは、３つの入力インターフェースがあることです。D-SUBに、仕事用のPCをつなぎ、DVIにゲーム機のPS3をつなぎ、display portに個人用PCをつないでいます。スィッチを押せば切り替えができるので楽です。

買ってから７年経ちますが、今のところ問題なく使えています。３５、０００円という、それなりの値段はしたので、長く使いたいと思っています。

一方、勤め先で使っている外部ディスプレイは２台目です。最初の一台は、買ってから２年未満で画面にノイズが出るようになり、買い替えざるを得ませんでした。今の機器は前のメーカーと違うところのものにしました。まだ１年程度しか使っていないので、どれくらい長持ちするかはわかりません。今は週に１回しか使いませんから。でも両方とも、一万円程度の機器だったし、私がお金を出して買ったものではないので、メーカー名は言わないでおきます。

ただ、３台の外部ディスプレイを使ってみて、共通の不満点はあります。一つは、スィッチが小さいことです。いくつかのスイッチが至近距離で並んでいて、押し間違えやすいのです。もう一つは、ケーブルを差し込む場所が裏側で、いったん差し込むと、外すのが大変だということです。この二つの点は、高齢者向きとは言えません。
それと、起動時にやたら画面が明るいのはメーカーに改善してほしいです。まぶしい、と言ってもいいくらいです。無駄な電力を消費していると思います。これは最近のiPadにも言えることです。iPad air2では、最初のリンゴの画面がつつましく表示されるのでよかったのですが、air3では、思いっきりまぶしいのです。アップル社は何を考えているのだろうかと思います。

もう一つ、PCとも共通することですが、起動中を示すランプがやたら明るいのです。EIZOも赤いランプが目障りで、ランプの上に丸いシールを貼っています。こういった機器の設計に携わる女性が増えたら、このような細かい部分もよくなっていくのではないだろうか、と思います。

Now, when I work from home, I connect my own external display to a notebook PC that I got permission to take out from my place of employment. Even when I go to work, I work by connecting an external display to my PC like that, but it's still convenient. When viewing multiple files or WEB screens on the laptop screen, you have to press the Alt key and Tab key at the same time to switch. You can compare and copy by just moving your line of sight without doing such an operation.
I have a child's study desk, and I can't afford to put it there, but I'm fortunate compared to my colleagues who work only with laptops placed on the dining table.
The external display I bought was the EIZO FlexScan 23.0 inch EV2336W-ZBK, which I bought in March 2014. I bought it before the consumption tax went up from 5% to 8%. I thought I had to buy it before the consumption tax went up. However, until last year, I used it only occasionally. Now that I have started working from home, it is very useful.
The nice thing about this device is that it has three input interfaces. A work PC is connected to the D-SUB, a PS3 game console is connected to the DVI, and a personal PC is connected to the display port. It's easy because you can switch by pressing the switch.

It's been 7 years since I bought it, but I can use it without any problems so far. It was a reasonable price of 35,000 yen, so I would like to use it for a long time.

On the other hand, the external display I use at work is the second one. Less than two years after I bought the first one, the screen became noisy and I had to buy a new one. The current equipment is different from the previous manufacturer. I've only used it for about a year, so I don't know how long it will last. I only use it once a week now. But both of them were about 10,000 yen, and I didn't buy them for money, so I won't say the manufacturer's name.

However, there are some common complaints when using three external displays. One is that the switch is small. Several switches are lined up at close range, making it easy to make a mistake. The other is that the cable is plugged in on the back side, and once plugged in, it's difficult to disconnect. These two points are not suitable for the elderly.
Also, I would like the manufacturer to improve the fact that the screen is bright at startup. It can be said that it is dazzling. I think it is wasting power. This is also true for modern iPads. I'm glad that the first apple screen is displayed humble on the iPad air2, but it's dazzling on the air3. I wonder what Apple is thinking.

Another thing that is common to PCs is that the lamp that indicates that it is starting up is very bright. EIZO also has a red lamp that is annoying, and a round sticker is stuck on the lamp. I think that if the number of women involved in the design of such equipment increases, such details will improve.
