ただ今、新茶シーズン。「茶町」をテーマにいたします。NHK大河ドラマ「青天を衝く」の渋沢栄一も茶町に関わりがあります。

茶町

Chamachi literally means 'tea town' in Japanese.
「ちゃまち」は文字通り、日本語で「茶の町」を意味します。

This district is strongly associated with Shizuoka's tea industry.
茶町と聞けばみんな静岡のお茶産業を必ず連想します。

Shizuoka's tea industry and Chamachi always go hand in hand.
静岡のお茶産業と茶町はいつも密接に結びついています。

Tea businesses were gathered in one district when Tokugawa Ieyasu was developing Sumpu city.
徳川家康が駿府のまちを整備した時、茶商たちは一つの地区に集められました。

Sumpu's tea brands 'Abe-cha' and 'Ashikubo-cha' were sold by tea traders in Chamachi.
安倍茶、足久保茶という駿府のブランド茶は茶町の茶商たちによって売られました。

In the Meiji period, Japanese tea became an important export along with raw silk.
明治時代、日本茶は生糸と並んで重要な輸出品でした。

When Shizuoka tea began to be exported directly from Shimizu in 1906, there was a bigger need for secondary processing facilities for tea in and around Chamachi.
静岡茶が1906年に直接清水から輸出され始めると、茶町とその周辺でお茶の加工設備がさらに必要とされました。

Shibusawa Eiichi, the father of Japan's capitalism, stayed in Chamachi when he served the local government.
日本の資本主義の父である渋沢栄一は、役人として静岡藩に勤めていた時、茶町に滞在していました。

He was accommodated at the building of Sakasho Bussan, a long-established company in Shizuoka.
静岡の老舗企業である坂庄物産の建物に宿泊していました。

The first joint stock company founded by Shibusawa Eiichi encouraged the growth of the tea industry in Shizuoka.
渋沢栄一が設立した最初の株式会社のおかげで静岡の茶産業は発展しました。

Did you know that tea plants can be found along a street in Chamachi?
茶町の通り沿いにチャの木があるのを知っていましたか？

It is said that these tea plants serve as an indicator of the tea picking season.
茶摘みの時期を知る目安になると言われています。

Interestingly, in Shizuoka city, tea trees are planted as ornamental plants.
興味深いことに、静岡市には茶の木が街を彩る木として植えられているのです。

It is fun to spot such "hidden tea trees".
「隠れチャの木」を見つけるのは面白いですよ。
(自分が知っている2か所は簡単にネットで見つかりました。もっとあるかな。歩いて探してみます。）
