Shippio, a trade tech startup, held the first company-wide event to celebrate its 5th anniversary!

Hello, I'm Hibiki Onodera, HR of the trade tech startup Shippio.
On July 2nd, we held the 1st Shippio Award, a company-wide event.
In this note, I would like to share how the Shippio Award was held, as well as what Shippio is aiming for.

I hope this gives some ideas for those who are interested in Shippio's values and culture.

The key word in this article is "Anchors", so let me introduce our “Anchors” first.

*All masks are removed only when taking photos. We are thoroughly taking infection control measures upon holding the event.

What is “Anchors”, Shippio's unique code of conduct?

Anchors is a code of conduct that Shippio has established to achieve our vision of “Transcending Forward-Thinking” It is similar to what is often described as "values" in general companies.
The word "Anchors" has the meaning of "Being the source of Shippio's commitment not to lose control through the long journey ahead, even when the big waves and storms come by".

There are three main roles of Anchors

Purpose of the Shippio Award

I am happy to announce that we welcomed five new members in July, and four new members in September. (three of them are the members of Engineering team with foreign background!)

As the organization expands, we held the first time award, having purpose as the following:

・To share the company's vision and strategy.
・By awarding and praising the members who embody Anchors, we aim to penetrate the culture that Shippio aims for in line with the Anchors.

This time, the award was held at the office with infection control measures.
At the venue, there were numbers of giant circulators that our CEO Sato went and purchased at Don Quijote on the day of the event. LOL!

Now, the 1st Shippio Award is about to begin!

Presentations from board members and managers

At first, CEO Sato and each division manager presented the mission for this term.
It ended by the cross-team and company-wide confirmation of our common mission!

Report on the results of the management survey

Next is a report on the results of the company-wide survey of management members that had been conducted earlier, followed by presentations from the survey target: CEO Sato, COO Tsuchiya, and VP of Product Mori.

Three members of the management team gave presentations on their perceptions of organizational issues, solutions to those issues, and their own issues and challenges that lead to organizational growth.

At the end of the half year, it was a great opportunity for the management team to declare that they would take the initiative in updating themselves as well as improving each department, and to have a common understanding that they would work together with the members to build a strong team by complementing each other.

Anchors category awards

Now it's time for the Anchors category awards!

The Best “Be Courageous and Decisive" Award goes to Makoto Masuda, the young ace of the operation team.

The reason for the award was as follows.

Even though our operation capacity was limited, he not only took charge of the shipment for our major customers, but also worked on JCO, which stands for job centric operation, and other new concepts of operation structuring and got results.

He has thought through the ideal skill and attitude of operation in Shippio, and has never been ambiguous, but has always been unafraid to offer constructive opinions and actually perform them.

When the young member received the award, the crowd bursted out with excitement.
The trophy was presented by operation team manager Masa Hayakawa.
He was very happy to see his team member receive this award.

And there’s more than a trophy… gorgeous prizes as well!

Next, the Best “Strive for greatness” Award goes to Dillon Wyatt from the Engineering team!!

He proactively measured many different metrics about the team, allowing him to give valuable suggestions which helped improve engineering processes.

His continuous focus on the process flaws helped team members to increase their individual speed by a 20% average over the course of the last 6 months.

Above was the reason for the award winning.

The extra prize for Dillon was Koshihikari rice and Kobe Beef, along with the Activity

Best “Believe in your fellow crew-mates" Award winner is ….. Erika, our Front-End Lead Engineer!!

The winning story of hers, was also very excellent as follows.

On top of her regular work, she successfully groomed her fellow engineers into solid contributors and promising leaders.
She made sure no-one in the team was left behind regarding the technical decisions, which helped reinforce the team spirit.

The award speech of each awardee was also very touching, with many words of appreciation for their team members and managers.

Comments from the participants (Only partial)

This was our first time to hold this event, and this was with many trials and errors.
However, we successfully received many warm comments from our wonderful members.

- I was personally very happy that the operation staff was awarded, as it is usually difficult for operation staff to receive recognition in logistics companies.
- It was a good opportunity for me to reconfirm the sense of unity and the centripetal force of the company.
- I think it was very good because we don't have many chances to know the accomplishments of other teams (especially those of non-managers).

Whom worked behind the scenes to organize the first Shippio Award

In order to hold the Shippio Award for the first time, Shunji Sekimoto (Customer Relation Manager), Kevin Bulme (Head of Engineering), Ryohei Takahashi (Customer Success), Kanako Otomo (HR assistant), and myself, Hibiki Onodera (HR) made arrangements from scratch.

Despite the very short three-week preparation schedule, the team worked wonderfully, focusing on the quality of the novelties and the originality of the extra prizes for the awardee and participants.

There was even a situation where we were SO focused on those items, that we did not have enough time to discuss the operating schedule for the day. (Sorry!)

And Tu Truong, our frontend engineer, designed the T-shirts and other novelty gifts for the Shippio Award this time.

The T-shirts were given out not only to the members but also to their families.
The daddy-children matching T-shirt photo was shared and brought smiles on everybody’s faces.

It was a great way to feel to be a part of Shippio, even though we are mainly working from home.

Closure

We were able to successfully hold the first Shippio Award with the cooperation of many members, all started from the idea from the management team.

I would like to continue challenging various measures in order for all members to build a wonderful culture, based on Shippio's unique Anchors.
This is all to achieve our vision of "To be the compass of logistics innovation" and above all, for all members to continue working with vitality.

Congratulations to all the Award winners!
