Malaysia

23rd

  • The first day of UMWOW!

    • We had a ceremony. The hall was big and nice. We had several games and enjoyed dance performances. UM officials were also nice. Although they were talking about serious matters, like the visa process, their explanation included a lot of jokes. Funny. a big difference from the Japanese one. Japanese ceremony is much more serious(and often boring).

    • Before the ceremony, we had an interview. The questions were simple, so I could answer fluently to some extent, but I really wanna improve my vocabulary.

    • I met Japanese students. There are a lot of Japanese here. It’s really interesting because I can tell this guy must be Japanese even though he/she said nothing. How can I tell? atmosphere? posture? way of moving?

  • Lunch

    • First time eating at cafeteria! I enjoyed nashi goren. a bit hot but delicious.

      • How cheap they are

        • they use a lot of plastic things. As a japanese, I feel like it’s outdated? there are still a lot of things we can do to stop global warming.

  • introduction of clubs

    • They have clubs of sports, language, social engagement, arts, and so on. I want to join all!

    • I wish I could get more information about each club. I couldn’t because each of them had games and because of that, UM students were busy and it was so clouded. But anyway, I enjoyed it a lot.

    • There was kinda プリクラ? I took a picture with one of my roommates and two other exchange students. Exciting

  • Having listened to explanations from all clubs, I received a gift. a coupon for a cafe. looking forward to drinking:)

  • temperature

    • a bit hot outside, but very very cold inside(due to air conditioners)

24th

  • Second day! Indian Dance!

    • There were three dance workshops. I joined the indian one. The other two types of dance were more gentle like bon-odori, but indian dance requires more moving. Three-hour practice made me tired, but it was exciting.

    • I enjoyed conversations with other exchange students.

    • I wish I had watched Japanese anime! Many students said they loved anime, but I knew almost nothing. I’ve heard names but never watched. sorry guys.

    • want to improve my Chinese skills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • A student from Kazakhstan gave me a chocolate. Delicious! She said it was 72%, but sweeter than the 72% of Japanese, i guess

  • campus tour!

    • how kind they are to exchange students. so many explanations and activities so that we can enjoy. does my uni have a campus tour? (even if not, I know, there’s no need to do that. the campus is too small)

    • While waiting for the start, I had conversations with other group members from different countries. I think I should learn how to pronounce the names of the chinese states.

    • so exciting. just being in a large large campus makes me excited. 24-hour open study room!! several libraries!

    • tired. it finished at 8 pm!

    • appreciate that they gave us a simple dinner for free

25th

  • free time in a 24-hour open study room

    • I’m writing this diary, and going to do journaling, manage household finances, etc.

  • Lunch

    • I met my friends at a cafeteria and ate mee goreng. that was nice. A lot of flies :(

    • also i bought mango juice(?). they cut raw mango and use it! fruity💓

  • 24-hour area

    • I went to the 24-hour area with my friend again.

    • watched AGT and BGT on YouTube. I have to do this even during my exchange program!! Congratulations, Richard and Sydney💓

  • Walking

    • I walked to my home. The campus is so large. Only going to the uni makes me exercise. lol.  I think it takes more than 40 minutes from my home to the other side of the uni, even though there is only a station between my home and the uni. more than 40 minutes. almost the same from my home in Japan to my high school by foot. lol.

  • get my 300 yen back

    • I bought a set of water bottles. I realized I had paid twice after getting home, so I asked the super to give the money back to me. relieved. They refunded it.

26th

  • money management

    • I need much more money than I expected🤔 even though the cost of living here is lower than in Japan. want to save money in a smart way

  • lunch, cafe, and ISC

    • went to the cafeteria to eat lunch with a friend of mine. enjoyed conversation with her.

    • went to Zus coffee shop in the uni and drank chocolate. it was like スタバ.

    • went to ISC to receive documents. the official was very kind and nice. explanation was straightforward to understand.

  • so many national flags

    • There are so many national flags! Is nationalism strong here?

    • If this were Japan, it would be very controversial due to the historical issue.

  • cooked fried rice

    • we could cook jasmine rice better than last time

27th

  • AM: home

    • after managing money, I draw a picture.

  • PM:last day of UMWOW!

  •  All students were required to wear their traditional clothes, and I wore Yukata. It was my first time to wear Yukata by myself, and 帯の結び方 was difficult. One of my roommates from Japan said that she had been a student of 着付け教室 before she lived in Indonesia so that she could wear it by herself. That's wonderful. I want to do that someday. BTW, these days, I really realize that I should do what I want to do during my uni life, 人生の夏休み. After graduation, we will be busy with our jobs. So I made a list of things I want to do.

    • When we tried to get on a bus, the driver said that he could not drive us inside the uni, because he had to pray.

    • we had several performances from different cultures! Malay music, Chinese tiger dance, Malaya dance, Borneo dance, Indian dance, Chinese songs and dance, K-POP dance, Indonesian dance and performance, and so on. I especially enjoyed the tiger dance and Indonesian performance. The tiger dance was powerful and spectacular. The Indonesian performance was about カルティニ. It was amazing.

    • I enjoyed seeing traditional clothes from different cultures. All of them were amazing.

    • Several students asked us whether our wearing was kimono or yukata. Going back home, we talked with students from Germany, Norway, and South Korea. I should know Japanese culture. Not only I don't know anime, but also I don't know ジブリ that much…

    • A Japanese man from the Ministry of Education? talked to us. surprised

28th

going to Mid Valley with my friend to go shopping

  • I had to buy several necessities, so I went to a mall which was very very very large. We got lost a lot.

  • There are a lot of Japanese stores. ダイソー、イオン、キャンメイク、ファミマ、無印、ドンキ、and many other stores that sell Japanese things. I don't think I am in a foreign country. lol

  • There are many supermarkets, so we compare prices. Each floor has イオン and each イオン is large.

  • Korean food for lunch. not hot. delicious. maybe it's not authentic?

  • There are a lot of sushi shops. But few of them were authentic. I found a true japanese sushi shop, which was expensive.

高級
  • We got ice cream for free! It was given by a bag shop, maybe so that customers paid more attention. but no one who got ice cream bought bags. lol

Fau Fu Fah
  • ドンキ sells so many Japanese things! I feel like I'm in Japan.

issues of our house

  • - water leak after heavy rainy

  • - The fan doesn't work

  • - light flickering

  • asked the owner and the agent to repair them.

real KL!?

  • experienced squall. so many sanders

29th

problems in the morning

  • due to the azan and traffic noises, I wake up early every day, even though I want to sleep more. Today was awful. A lot of police cars or ambulances were driving. Even though my home is in a high floor, I can hear the sound clearly and loudly. SO sleepyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • Having said so, the life with Azan is nice. I truly realize the Islamic culture. I didn't know that the azan is not recorded, but sung(?) by someone every time. It's also interesting that there is a world competition for azan.

stuck in a lift

  • When I went home, the lift didn't work and I was stuck in it. The door was about to open, but it didn't. Seems like something is hooked.

  • It was scary, but the people around me were relatively calm. Also, one of my roommates said that she had the same experience. so could be normal here.

reading newspaper

  • the other day, i thought it inconvenient to pay a train ticket only by specific card and soon realized it is the same in japan. But today, I found this article. How fast and amazing the change of technology is!
