couldn't = wasn't(weren't)  able to

B. No, he wasn't able to. It was too heavy.

B.　いいえ、彼はそれを上げられませんでした。　
　　それはとても重たかった。

suit =「合わせる」
I'll suit you. =「あなたに合わせます。」
It suits you. ＝「似合いますね」
