Day 2

Today's focus was also on texture. The dancers started with the improvisation to discover what kind of textures they have in their movements, then chose one texture to develop.

Texture!

Since the word texture is very important in Hiraoki's creation, he explained what it means in his work to the dancers. In order to feel the texture of the movement, dancers need to be in a certain state of awareness (nothing magical or occult here!) This state of awareness is logically explained to the dancers - it's like really carefully sensing and feeling each movement and what's happening to the body while moving. It's very clear when dancers are in that state because the quality of their movements changes drastically.

From the way the dancers move and work on each task, I saw various characters of them such as uniqueness and boldness, and that reminded me how much information a human body has.

Homework

There was a simple homework for the dancers. I cannot wait to see/hear it tomorrow!

Portrait of the choreographer

Before Hiroaki arrived in the studio in Tokyo, the 3 dancers and I drew the portrait of him. He guessed who drew which and got 2/4 right (meaning 2/4 wrong)!
