スミレの山 高尾山⑤ ヒカゲスミレ Takao, the mountain of violets: No.5 Hikage-sumire

高尾山は、知る人ぞ知るスミレの山。
日本では、約５０種のスミレの野生種(*1)が確認されていますが、高尾にはそのうち１８種が自生している(*2)と言われています。高尾山ならびにその周辺では、毎年３月上旬から５月下旬にかけて、あちこちで可憐なスミレの花々を観察することができます。
Mt. Takao is known as habitats for a wide variety of wild violet flowers (in Japanese, sumire, or “Sue-Mee-Ray”). In Japan, about 50 species of wild violets (*1) have been confirmed, and 18 of them are said to grow naturally in the Mt. Takao area(*2). Every year from the beginning of March to the end of May, you can find pretty violet flowers all over the place in Mt. Takao and its surroundings.

ヒカゲスミレは、その名のとおりあまり日の当たらないところでひっそりと咲いています。特に、小さなせせらぎがある湿った環境を好み、人里近くではあまり見かけません。山中でも、他のスミレと比べて個体数は少なく、高尾では比較的珍しい部類にはいります。ただし全国的には個体数が少ないということはなく、日本列島に広く分布しています。
As the name suggests, Hikage (“Hee-Kah-Gei”) -sumire (Viola yezoensis) grow in places where the sun light is shaded by trees. In addition, they are fond of moist environments, such as those near small streams, and seldom found near human habitation. Even deep in the mountains, they cannot be found as much as other violets, making them relatively less seen in Takao. However, they are not a species of rarity. Their habitats spread all over Japan.
ヒカゲスミレの特徴は、花の側弁が完全に開かず上弁と重なり合って、全体的に平たいフォルムになることと、花弁はほぼ純白で、特に下弁にはっきりと紫色の条が観察されることです。
One of the features of Hikage-sumire is that the side petals of the flower do not open completely and overlap the upper petal, making the flower flat-looking in its overall shape. In addition, the flower is nearly pure white, and there are clear purple veins running on the petals, especially on the lower one.

ヒカゲスミレは葉の色にバリエーションがあり、その中でも葉が茶褐色ないしは黒紫色を帯びるものはタカオスミレと呼ばれています。かつて、タカオスミレはヒカゲスミレの変種と考えられていましたが、最新の研究ではヒカゲスミレの色違いであり、種として違いはないことが明らかになっています(*3)。
Hikage-sumire have variations in the color of their leaves. Those with dark brown or black purple leaves are called Takao-sumire. In the past, Takao-sumire were considered to be a variant of Hikage-sumire. Based on the latest research, however, Hikage-sumire and Takao-sumire are the same species with just different colors(*3).
They like moist, shady environments.
