今回も、Homespun Songs of the C.S.A volume.1から。

All Quiet Along the Potomac

歌詞はこのサイトを参照しましたが、そのままではなかったので、自分で聞きながら編集しました。海外経験があるわけでもない、素人の書き起こしなので、不安。
「Bobby Hortonの」Lyricsと書いてあるページでも、平気で他のバージョンを載せているところばかりで、こちらのバージョンの歌詞は見当たらない。頼むよ、アメリカ人。

今夜のポトマック川のほとりは、本当に静かだ

Where the soldiers lie peacefully dreaming
川のほとりで、兵士たちがおだやかに眠っている

And their tents in the rays of the clear autumn moon

A tremulous sigh, as a gentle night-wind

今夜のポトマック川のほとりは、本当に静かだ！

解説：
・第一次ブルランの戦い（1861年7月）の前夜に、見張りの兵が殺された事件を歌った歌だそう。
tremulousは、寒さで凍えているのかと思いきや、真夏のうだるような暑さの中行われた戦いということ。文脈的にも、恐ろしさで震えているんだと思います。

同曲の多くの歌詞には1番があり、そこでは見張り番の死が弔われている様子が歌われています。つまり、見張り番が死んだことを明かしたうえで、彼が死ぬまでの夜の情景を描く、というストーリー構成になっているというわけです。
個人的には、今回訳したバージョンのほうが、驚きがあって好き。まさかこのおだやかな旋律と歌詞で、最後に人が殺されるとは思わない…
