ボビー・ホートン The Bonnie Blue Flag 和訳
今回もHomespun Songs of the C.S.A volume.1から。
今回は、とうとう連合軍の代名詞的な歌である、ボニーブルーフラッグの番。
以前訳したホームスパン・ドレスと同じメロディの曲だけれども、こっちのほうが圧倒的に有名だと思う。

解説
・とてもかっこいい動画があるので、ぜひ観て欲しい。
南北戦争をテーマにした、Gods and Generals（noteってイタリック体
対応してないんですね）という映画で、くしくもカットされてしまったシーンです。ちなみに邦訳版はなし…泣
雰囲気の作りこみがすごい。
私は大好きすぎて、もう数十回見てると思う。
ちなみにバンドに入っているのは、おなじみ2nd South Carolina String Band。
・ヴァージニア州の別名にthe (Old) Dominion state（古き領土）というのがあるらしい。というのも、イギリスが入植したアメリカの13の植民地のなかで、最も古いからだそうだ。
・デイヴィス大統領と、スティーブン・ダグラスについて。
デイヴィス大統領は、連合国（連合軍＝南軍が独立を主張していた国）の唯一の大統領。奴隷制に反対の立場でありながらも、南部出身の政治家として、連合国の指導者となった。戦中はカリスマ性を発揮できなかったものの、戦後のレコンストラクション（詳しくはOh I’m a good old rebelにて解説）に反対し、南部の民衆から支持を集めた。
statesman rareとして名前が挙げられているスティーブン・ダグラスは、民主党代表候補として、共和党代表のリンカーンと合衆国大統領の座を争った政治家。北部に属すイリノイ州出身ということもあり、北軍側についている。
では、なぜここで名前が挙げられるのか。
おそらく、彼の政治的な立ち位置にある。
ダグラスは、奴隷制に賛成か反対かを、州ごとに決定させるべき、という案を出し、奴隷制に全面的に反対であるリンカーンと論争した。そのため、南部の住人からは、強大な支持を得ていたのである。
以前から何度か述べていることだが、指揮官や政治家などの上流階級においては、奴隷制に対する態度で、帰属（南北どちらにつくか）を決めることは少ないようである。それよりも、故郷愛が重視された時代だった。
