1  Few historical comparisons can be more judiciously made than between the Chivalry of Europe and the Bushido of Japan, and, if history repeats itself, it certainly will do with the fate of the latter what it did with that of the former.

矢内原訳：ヨーロッパの騎士道と日本の武士道との間に於（お）ける如（ごと）く適切なる歴史的比較を爲（な）し得るものは稀である。而（しこう）して若（も）し歴史が繰返すものとすれば、後者の運命は必ずや前者の遭遇（そうぐう）したるを繰返すであらう。

櫻井訳：凡そ歷史上、歐洲武 士 道と日本武士道との如くに、酷似せるものあるは甚だ稀なり。而して歷史は繰返すものなりとせば、彼の運命は、又た必ずや、之を俟たずんばあらず。
