20071029 グッゲンハイム美術館

ニューヨークで好きな建物と言えば、クライスラービルと、このグッゲンハイム美術館だ。設計は泣く子も黙る？フランク・ロイド・ライト。
MacOS8の頃、デフォルトの壁紙として僕が描いたHi-Fi Sequenceというイラストにも、この美術館が登場している。当時それが美術館だとは知らずに描いたという記憶がある。この手の資料を眺めていると必ず登場する主役の様な存在だ。
今回実物を見られるという事ではりきってやってきたのだが・・・・・残念ながら外壁の補修工事をしていて、美術館の周りには足場が組まれ、そのフォルムを確認することが出来なかった。ここに限らず、ニューヨークの至る所で、トンテンカントンテンカンと、いつも工事の音が響いていた。・・・美術館自体は営業していたので、仕方なく中から観察することに。真ん中の吹き抜けを背後に、螺旋状にくるくると登りながら作品を鑑賞するスタイルはユニークだが、あまりにもユニークなために建築自体が主役になっていると思う。まあ、それでもいいと思う。手すりが丁度腰の位置までしかないので、下を覗き込むと転落しそうな感じだった。高所恐怖症の人は要注意です。

この手の資料を眺めていると・・・と書いてありますが、日本人（僕たちの世代）にとってのパストフューチャーの記憶（レトロフューチャーという言葉も一時期蔓延していたけど、現在は、昔の人が描いた未来を超えてしまっているので、こういう表現が出てきました。ややこしいですね）といえば、大阪万博だと思います。残念ながら僕は会場に足を運べませんでしたが、（遺産として残っている）太陽の塔をはじめて見たときには、もうこんな美術作品は生まれてこないんだろうな、と、本当に涙を流してしまいました。

この手の資料の話に戻しますね。アメリカにおける大阪万博というのは、間違いなくニューヨーク・ワールド・フェアー(1964−65）でしょうね。このキーワードで検索すると、大阪万博と同様、美術的価値のある資料に出会うことが出来ます。原風景としての博覧会・・・

This museum also appeared in an illustration called Hi-Fi Sequence, which I drew as the default wallpaper when I was using MacOS8. I remember that I drew it without knowing it was a museum at the time. Whenever I look at this kind of material, it always seems to play a leading role.
I was very excited to see the real thing this time, but unfortunately, the museum was undergoing repair work on its exterior walls and scaffolding was erected around it, so I could not see its form. Not only here, but everywhere in New York, there was always the sound of construction work going on. Since the museum itself was open for business, I had no choice but to observe from inside. It says, "When I look at this kind of material..." This kind of expression came up because the memory of past-future (the word "retro-future" was also prevalent for a while, but now we have surpassed the future that people in the past envisioned. (It's complicated, isn't it?) Speaking of which, I think of the Osaka Expo. Unfortunately, I was not able to visit the venue, but when I saw the Tower of the Sun (which remains as a heritage site) for the first time, I really shed tears, thinking that such a work of art would never be created again.

Let me return to the subject of this kind of material. The Osaka Expo in the U.S. would definitely be the New York World's Fair (1964-65). If you search with these keywords, you will find materials that have the same artistic value as the Osaka World's Fair. The exposition as an original landscape...
