エゾシカ親子に出会い、タウシュベツへ

5月下旬から6月の今頃にかけては、エゾシカの出産時期に当たります。タウシュベツ川橋梁へ向かう道のりはエゾシカの生息地。そのため、この時期になると、生まれてまだ間もないような子ジカを連れた親子に出会うことがあります。

初夏の風物詩といったところなので、それほど珍しいことではないのですが、今朝見かけた親子は少し違っていました。

子ジカのサイズが今までに見たどれよりも小さかったのです。初めに林道の50メートルほど先に見えたシルエットでは、キタキツネかと思ったほどです。

こちらを警戒する親の後を追って、森の奥へヨチヨチと歩いていく子ジカを見ていると、ふだんあまりエゾシカに対して感傷的な思いを持たない僕ですら、果たしてこの夏を越せるのか気にかかるのでした。

そしてまた、アイヌ語でエゾシカを、「獲物」を意味する「yuk ユㇰ」と呼ぶことを思い出して、それが妙に腑に落ちました。

それはそれとして、タウシュベツ川橋梁です。

果たして今年を越せるのかどうかと言われながらもう10年以上が経ち、今朝も変わらずに立っていました。僕が記録を撮り続けてきた20年近くを振り返っても、人の予測や心配、思惑が自然のあり方に対してどれほど無効であるかを実感せずにはいられません。

キタキツネサイズの子ジカの行く末もまた、タウシュベツ川橋梁と同じように、人の感傷とは関係なく淡々とそこにあるものなのかもしれません。

From late May to early June marks the birthing period for the Ezo deer. The route towards the Taushubetsu Bridge is a habitat for these deer. Thus, during this time, it's common to encounter a doe with her newborn fawn.

It's a seasonal spectacle of early summer, so it isn't particularly rare. However, the mother and child I saw this morning were a little different.

The fawn was smaller than any I've seen before. At first, I spotted their silhouettes about 50 meters ahead on the forest road and thought it might be a Ezo red fox.

Following its cautious mother, the fawn wobbled into the depths of the forest. Even for someone like me, who isn't usually sentimental about Ezo deer, I couldn't help but worry whether it could survive this summer.

I recalled that in the Ainu language, the term for Ezo deer is "yuk," which means "prey." Somehow, it seemed to make perfect sense.

Shifting gears, let's talk about the Taushubetsu Bridge.

Despite predictions of its imminent collapse for over a decade, it still stood as firm as ever this morning. Reflecting on nearly 20 years of my documentation, I couldn't help but realize how ineffective human forecasts, worries, and speculations are against the course of nature.

Perhaps the fate of the red fox-sized fawn, like the Taushubetsu Bridge, exists detached from human sentiment, existing calmly in its own right.
