翠雨のあと、湖底の草原で
雨が降り止むのを待って車を降りると、糠平湖底で青草を喰むエゾシカの群れが目に入りました。風のない湿った空気が充ちた朝の穏やかな風景です。
距離にして200メートルほどでしょうか。カメラを手に、足音を殺してゆっくりと近づいていくと、群れの中の一頭が目ざとくこちらに気づきました。動きを止めてみること3秒、彼が大きく鋭い警戒の鳴き声を上げると、群れはあっという間に湖底の草原を駆け抜け、彼方へと消えてきました。
走り去るエゾシカを見送ると、湖底に残ったのはいつもの通り林立する切り株と湖底に立つタウシュベツ川橋梁、そしてその風景を眺める僕だけになりました。
生い茂る新緑の海に、次第に飲み込まれていくような錯覚を覚えるような風景です。
先月下旬から徐々に水位が増加傾向に転じた糠平湖。それでもその速さはまだゆっくりとしているので、これからさらに緑が色濃くなっていきそうです。
Waiting for the rain to cease, I stepped out of my car. That's when I spotted a herd of Ezo deer grazing on the lush grass at the bottom of Nukabira Lake. It was a serene morning scene, replete with still, moist air.
The deers were about 200 meters away from me. Holding my camera, I began to approach quietly, careful not to make a sound. Then, one alert deer in the herd noticed me. I froze in my tracks. But three seconds later, the deer let out a loud, sharp alarm call. Almost instantly, the herd sprinted across the meadow at the lake's bottom, disappearing into the distance.
All I could do was watch the Ezo deer run off. Then, all that remained in the lakebed were the familiar stumps standing tall and the Taushubetsu Bridge. I was the only one left observing this scenery, which felt increasingly enveloped by a burgeoning sea of fresh greenery.
Since late last month, the water level in Nukabira Lake has been slowly rising. The increase has been gradual, so it seems the greenery will become even more vibrant in the coming time.
