【Kidnapping Insurance】
Due to the pandemic of Covid-19, the number of overseas travelers came to a halt, but nowadays, it is gradually returning back to normal. People are regaining the joy of traveling through which they escape reality and acquire new perspectives. However, one must remember how vital travel insurance is when traveling abroad because there are countries in the world where medical expenses are high. One example is the United States, where in principle, each hospital determines the price of its medical care, whereas the initial consultation fee usually ranges from about $150 to over $300 in all medical facilities. In one case, a traveler who underwent surgery for appendicitis in the United States was billed $15,000. Of course, one should consider that ambulances are also not free of charge. Costs in some States include a base pay of $2,700, plus $65 per mile added to the treatment costs. Taking all of this into consideration, travelers need to buy travel insurance in advance. "No insurance, no travel." This phrase is utterly important for travelers to keep in their minds. However, only a few people know how insurance was created in the first place.
The prototype of insurance dates back to the ancient Orient, where the old civilizations came together and started doing trades. Back then, due to the risk of disasters and theft, it was natural for people to prepare themselves beforehand for such risks. Consequently, the prototype of life insurance debuted among merchants in medieval Europe. The association of merchants, called a guild, provided a mutual assistance system for its members.
The guild would receive regular payments from merchants who were part of the association. When the members were in financial trouble, funds were passed to them for help. In the case where a merchant passed away, the association provided a stipend as a form of financial assistance to the merchant's family.
There also exists kidnapping insurance. In such cases, a considerable amount of money is required to pay as ransom besides hiring negotiation experts and lawyers, which is usually covered by the kidnapping insurance. About 15 insurance companies in Europe and in the United States currently offer this type of insurance. However, in Japan, insurance companies are legally prohibited from handling any type of kidnapping insurance due to the risk they face of inducing kidnapping acts among the society.

誘拐保険もあります。 このような場合、通常は誘拐保険の対象となる交渉の専門家や弁護士を雇うほか、身代金として多額の費用が必要となります。 現在、ヨーロッパと米国で約 15 の保険会社がこのタイプの保険を提供しています。 しかし、日本では、保険会社が社会的に誘拐行為を誘発する危険性があるため、あらゆる種類の誘拐保険の取り扱いが法的に禁止されています。
