今日は本から｜時を忘れさせるほどに豊かな森は、倒木のある森だ

森が消えるとき

私の知るかぎり、時を忘れさせるほどに豊かな森は、倒木のある森だ。人工林には倒木がない。伐採されて、搬出を待っている木が寝かされているだけで、自然の倒木が次の世代の木を育てているということはない。日本庭園にも倒木を見かけることはまれである。自然の森を模してあり、半ばは自然の森になっている庭園もあるのだが、本当の森とちがうのはそこに倒木のないことだ。若木を育てたり虫たちが巣くっている倒木がない。まして、公園には倒木がない。台風で倒れることもあるだろうが、何日かしたらクレーン車などがやって来て取り除いてゆくだろう。人工林にも日本庭園にも公園にも、自然の森に流れているあの豊かな時間はない。

”As far as I know, an enriched forest that makes you forget about time always has fallen trees. There are no fallen trees in a planted forest. There might be some logged trees waiting to be carried out, but no fallen trees being there to foster the baby trees of next generation. This is true for Japanese gardens, too. They often imitate a natural forest, but they lack fallen trees. No fallen trees raising young trees nor no bugs nesting in them. Much less fallen trees in the parks. Some trees get fallen down because of a typhoon, but they soon will be removed by trucks. You won't experience such a rich time in planted forests, Japanese gardens nor parks. That's only possible in natural forests.”
