しかし、1970年代に入ると、ラベンダー栽培は危機を迎えます。貿易自由化により安価な輸入香料が流入し、さらに合成香料の技術が進歩。ラベンダーオイルの価格は急落し、多くの農家がラベンダー栽培を断念しました。1973年には、一帯でラベンダーを栽培し続けていたのは、ほぼファーム富田だけとなりました。

この危機を乗り越えたのは、富田家の創意工夫と不屈の精神でした。1976年、日本国有鉄道のカレンダーにファーム富田のラベンダー写真が掲載されたことを機に、観光客が訪れ始めます。さらに、テレビドラマ「北の国から」の放映により、一躍有名観光地となりました。

富田家は、この機会を逃しませんでした。ラベンダーの加工品開発に着手し、1980年代にはエッセンシャルオイルの抽出に成功。オリジナル香水「フラノ」や石鹸「ソープラベンダー」を次々と開発しました。それまで経営を支えていた稲作を中止し、花の栽培と加工に経営の軸を移したのもこの頃です。

1990年には、フランスで開催された「ラベンダー芳香フェア」で、ファーム富田のオリジナルエッセンシャルオイル「おかむらさき」が第1位を獲得。同時に「オートプロヴァンス・ラベンダー修道騎士」の称号を授与されました。これは、ラベンダーの本場フランスが、遠く離れた北海道の農園の努力と品質を認めた瞬間でした。

The story of Farm Tomita begins with the history of Hokkaido's pioneering. In 1897, the Hokkaido National Unopened Land Disposal Law was enacted, and many people crossed over to Hokkaido with dreams in their hearts. Among them was Tokuma Tomita, the founder of Farm Tomita. In 1903, Tokuma took his hoe to the land of what is now Nakafurano Town. Hokkaido at the time was undeveloped land. Fighting against the harsh nature, they opened up the land step by step. However, the journey to Farm Tomita's present form was long. The turning point came in the 1950s. Tokuma's grandson, Tadao Tomita, encountered the lavender fields of Masakazu Ueda, a pioneer in lavender cultivation. Mesmerized by its beauty, Tadao began cultivating lavender for perfumery in 1958. Starting with a 10-are field, Tadao and his wife expanded their lavender cultivation to 1.2 hectares.
But in the 1970s, lavender cultivation faced a crisis. With trade liberalization, inexpensive imported perfumes flowed in, and the technology of synthetic fragrances advanced. The price of lavender oil plummeted, and many farmers abandoned lavender cultivation. By 1973, Farm Tomita was almost the only one still cultivating lavender in the area.
Overcoming this crisis was due to the creativity and indomitable spirit of the Tomita family. In 1976, the lavender photos of Farm Tomita were featured in a calendar by the Japanese National Railways, attracting tourists. Furthermore, the broadcast of the TV drama "From the Northern Country" made it a famous tourist spot.
The Tomita family seized this opportunity. They began developing lavender processed products, and in the 1980s, they succeeded in extracting essential oil. They developed original perfumes like "Furano" and soaps like "Soap Lavender." Around this time, they also shifted their business focus from rice farming, which had been supporting their management, to flower cultivation and processing.
In 1990, at the "Lavender Fragrance Fair" held in France, Farm Tomita's original essential oil "Okamurasaki" won first place. Simultaneously, they were awarded the title of "Knight of the Order of the Lavender of Haute-Provence." This was a moment when France, the home of lavender, recognized the efforts and quality of a farm far away in Hokkaido.
Today, Farm Tomita boasts about 15 hectares of lavender fields, with many flowers blooming throughout the year. Fields like "Field of Flower People," "Field of Colors," and "Forest of Colors" each have their unique characteristics, enchanting visitors.
Within the farm, there are facilities where you can experience not only the beauty of the flowers but also the nature and history of Hokkaido. The Lavender Museum offers a history lesson from the pioneering era to the present day. The Dry Flower House, designed by a Dutch designer, presents a space titled "Picnic in the Forest of Furano in Hokkaido," allowing visitors to feel the richness of Hokkaido's nature.
