言霊 / Kotodama / Words having power

日本には言霊という言葉がある。発する言葉が現実を創造する力があるという考えだ。正確には、言葉を発する前に、そこには本人の意志があり、意志を伴った言葉が現実を作るということ。だから、言霊という字を書く。

ルーサーバーバンクという方をご存知だろうか。アメリカの有名な農学科学者だ。3,000種の植物の品種改良を行い、新品種1,000種を紹介した人物だ。例えば、日本のシャインマスカットの開発には33年かかっている。約55年間で約4,000種類の品種改良、新品種の紹介をしたのがいかに凄いかが分かる。彼は、棘のないサボテン品種改良にも成功している。実は、彼は言葉の力を使っていたと言われている。品種改良には花粉交配、薬剤処理（ホルモン剤等）、遺伝子組替え、等がある。だけど、彼は棘のないサボテンを作るのに、毎日サボテンに語りかていたそうだ。「私が守るから、身を守る棘など必要はないんだよ」と。言葉で品種改良を行ってしまったと言われている。「植物の品種改良の秘訣は科学的知識を別にすればそれは愛です」ルーサーバーバンク談

言葉が現実を創造します。言葉を大事にしましょう。

In Japan there is a word called “KOTODAMA”, meaning words has a power to create reality. To say strictly, there is a will before saying words for everyone and the will creates the reality, that is why KOTODAMA is written with 2 Chinese characters, “言” meaning to say something, “霊” meaning spirit. Spirit to say something is KOTODAMA.

Have you ever heard of the name, Dr Luther Burbank? He is well-known American agricultural scientist who had succeeded in breeding 3,000 varieties of plants and introduced 1,000 new varieties of plants over his 55-year career. You can get to know how great it was to develop about 4,000 varieties for 55 years by seeing the fact that It took 33 years to develop shine-muscat in Japan for your reference. He also created the spineless cactus. 

The thing is, he is said to have used the power of words. Usually for breeding there are the ways of hybridization, chemical treatment, genetic modification etc, however what he had done to create spineless cactus was to tell them everyday “You don’t need your defensive thorns, I will protect you.” And in time, the thorns fell away. He bred by words.
