A loud blast was heard during Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's campaign event in the port city of Wakayama on Saturday, creating chaos as the crowd attempted to flee. The premier was evacuated from the scene, reportedly unharmed, and authorities have taken one suspect into custody.
土曜日、和歌山市の港町で行われた岸田文雄首相の選挙イベント中に大きな爆発があり、群衆が逃げ出そうとする中、混乱が生じた。首相は無傷で現場から避難し、当局は容疑者1名を拘束した。

An explosion rang out around 11:30am local time as the PM prepared to deliver a stump speech at the Saigasaki fishing port, with a man emerging from the crowd and hurling what appeared to be a “smoke bomb” toward Kishida, according to Kyodo News.
共同通信によると、現地時間の午前11時30分頃、首相が雑賀崎漁港で街頭演説の準備をしている最中に爆発音が鳴り響き、群衆の中から男が現れて岸田氏に向かって「発煙筒」のようなものを投げつけたという。

Multiple witnesses cited by NHK, including a local city council member, said they saw somebody throw a “cylindrical silver object” immediately before the blast. There were no injuries, according to initial reports.
NHKによると、地元の市議会議員を含む複数の目撃者が、爆発の直前に誰かが「円筒形の銀色の物体」を投げるのを見たと語っている。最初の報道によると、負傷者はいなかった。

The resulting panic was captured on video, showing police officers scuffling with a suspect on the ground as they attempted to subdue him. Bystanders were also seen fleeing in all directions amid the confusion.
その結果、パニックが発生し、警察官が地面に倒れた容疑者を取り押さえようと格闘している様子が映像に収められている。また、混乱に乗じて四方八方に逃げ惑う群衆の姿も確認された。

Kishida was unharmed in the incident and safely evacuated from the area, according to Japanese officials. The leader traveled to the port city to voice support for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as candidates campaign for a by-election set for later this month.
日本政府関係者によると、岸田氏はこの事件で負傷することなく、無事に避難したという。岸田氏は、今月末に予定されている予備選挙に向け、与党・自由民主党への支持を表明するため、港町に足を運んだ。

The PM’s predecessor, Shinzo Abe, was assassinated during a public campaign event last year, with a gunman fatally shooting the former leader with a homemade firearm. A 41-year-old veteran of the Japanese military, Tetsuya Yamagami, was arrested at the scene and later confessed to the murder.
首相の前任者である安倍晋三は昨年、公開の選挙イベント中に暗殺され、銃を持った男が手製の銃器で前首相を射殺した。41歳の退役自衛隊員、山上徹也が現場で逮捕され、後に殺人を自供した。
