Expressions・英熟語(英検１級～準1級レベル)

今年の6月から始めたことですが、毎日自分自身のtwitterで英検1級～準1級レベルのexpression(熟語)をオリジナルの例文とセットで紹介しています。

自分自身が定期購読しているのはNew York TimesとBlinkistというアプリで、こちらで目にしたものや、英検の過去問を参考にピックアップしています。実際の英語で使われる意味とその例文をオリジナルでまとめています。

dwell on

constantly think about something, focus too much on something

Let's not dwell on the past and let's move forward.
過去にとらわれず、前に進もう。
※dwell in=live in, a dwelling=a house or something you live in

pull off

脱ぐ・やってのける

Pull off the band aid.
バンドエイドをはがしてください。

He was the underdog in hockey and he was a really bad player, but he managed to pull off an amazing feat. He scored 10 times within 15 minutes.
彼はホッケーでは劣等生で、本当に下手な選手だったのですが、驚くべき偉業を成し遂げることができた。15分以内に10回得点したのだ。

chip away at

削り取る

They're chipping away at the ice in order to make the sculpture.
彫刻を作るために、氷を削っていた。

She had done something bad long ago, and it started to chip away at her conscience.
昔悪いことをしたので、良心が痛み始めた。

crack up

 laugh really hard, go crazy (an older way of using it)

The man told a joke, and he just had me cracking up.
その人が冗談を言ったので、私は大爆笑してしまった。

He cracked up and went to the asylum.
彼は精神的に弱って保護施設へ行った。

iron out

アイロンをかける・解決する

You need to iron out all the wrinkles in your shirt.
シャツのシワをすべてアイロンで伸ばす必要があります。

We need to iron out all the hiccups along the way so that on game day everything goes smoothly.
試合当日にすべてがスムーズに進むように、そこに至るまでの問題をすべて解決する必要があるのです。
‘hiccups’ are ‘problems’, and ‘iron out’ means ‘to make sure that there are no problems’

pass out

意識を失う

It was so hot that students are passing out right now.
あまりの暑さに学生が気を失いかけています。

own up to

〜を認める

You need to own up to your mistakes.
自分の過ちを認めなければならない。

weigh in= chime in

give your opinion

How about you weigh in on this?
= What do you think about this?

We're gonna have this meeting, so chime in anytime when you have an idea.
このミーティングするので、意見があればいつでも会話に入って。

waste away

憔悴する

The man just gave up on life after his wife passed away and he just wasted away.
その人は奥さんに先立たれた後、人生をあきらめてただただ衰弱してしまった。

swear by

信用する

I swear by the cool towel. It works.
冷やしたタオルは効果があると信じています。いい感じ。

play up

強調する

You need to play up your abilities and really talk about what you're good at.
自分の能力をアピールし、得意なことをしっかり語る必要があります。

stock up on

買い置きする

It's really important in the summer to stock up on bottled water and emergency supplies.
夏場はペットボトルの水や防災用品を買いだめしておくことがとても重要です。

decked out in

着飾っている

That guy was decked out in a three-piece suit. It was immaculate, and he was dressed to the nines.
その人はスリーピースのスーツを着て、完璧に着こなしていました。※dressed to the nines：着こなしている

back up

バックする・たまる

We put the car in reverse and we had to back up slowly.
車を逆向きに止めたので、ゆっくりバックしないといけなかった。

‘Back up’ can also mean stomach issues.
He was backed up.= He was constipated.
彼は便秘だった。

act up

正常に動かない・さわぐ

My car was acting up, so it was not running smoothly.
車の調子が悪くて、スムーズに走らなかった。

Kids always act up and then the parents have to discipline them.
子供はいつも騒ぐので親はしつけなければならない。

pass over

通り過ぎる・候補から外す

The plane is passing over Japan.
その飛行機は日本の上空を通過している。

We passed over him because he did not seem qualified on paper.
彼は書類から適任ではなさそうに見えたので、候補から外しました。

add up

意味をなす・合計する
He told me one thing. She told me another thing. Their stories didn't add up.
彼は私にあることを話し、彼女はまた別のことを話した。彼らの話はつじつまが合わない。

Can you add up these figures?
これらの数字を足し合わせてくれますか？

shape up

change the way that you're acting, change the way that you're being because you're being difficult. It's usually with military school or something.

Shape up or you're gonna get shipped out.
ちゃんとしてないと追い出されるぞ。

go through with

やりとげる

I can't go through with asking the boy to the dance. It's too scary.
あの男の子をダンスに誘うなんて、とてもできない。そんな勇気はない。

He went through with his proposal. He took her to France and proposed in front of the Eiffel Tower.
彼はプロポーズを実行に移した。彼は彼女をフランスに連れて行き エッフェル塔の前でプロポーズした。

get by

通る・何とか生活する

Could you move so I can get by?
私が通れるように動いてくれませんか？

It's really really difficult to get by on 1000 yen a month or something.
月1000円とかで生活していくのは本当に大変だ。

plunge into

飛び込む・～し始める

The diver plunged into the ocean to save the kid.
ダイバーは子供を助けるために海に飛び込んだ。

We plunged into studying with fervor.
私たちは熱心に勉強に打ち込み始めた。

buy into

株を買う(invest), 信じる(believe)

I want to buy into this company because it's cutting edge.
この会社は最先端だから投資したい。

I don't buy into the hype surrounding healthcare products.
ヘルスケア製品に関する誇大広告は信じない。

pin down

押さえつける・つきとめる

The stronger kid has pinned down the weaker kid.
強い子が弱い子を押さえつけた。

I couldn't pin down the exact moment that this happened.
それが起こった正確な瞬間を特定することはできなかった。

shy away from

避ける
shyには形容詞「恥ずかしい」に加えて動詞「しりごみする」という意味があります。

Kids tend to shy away from people they don't know.
子供は初対面の人を避ける傾向があります。

weed out

取り除く(=separate and get rid of)

I like to weed out what I need and what I don't need every spring.
毎年春に、必要なものと不要なものを選別するのが好きです。

We need to weed out the good athletes from the not-so-good athletes.
優秀なアスリートとそうでないアスリートを選別する必要がある。

hold off on

控える

We held off on taking a trip last year because we didn't have enough money.
昨年はお金がなくて、旅行に行くのを控えていました。

※hold 人 off：(ケンカなどで)人を近寄らせないようにする
Hold him off!

lay off

そっとしておく・解雇する

Lay off (of) him.
= Leave him alone.

The company is now closing, so all the workers got laid off.
その会社が廃業することになり、従業員は全員解雇された。

force down

無理に飲み込む
force ～ down one’s throat：～を…に無理やり飲ませる

The doctors forced pills down my throat. It was horrible. 医者に無理やり薬を飲まされた。怖かった。

dawn on

〜に分かるようになる

It just dawned on me I have to completely change the way I do things.
=I realized I have to completely change the way I do things.
今、私は自分のやり方を完全に変えなければならないと分かってきた。

tear into

すごい勢いで食べる・激しく非難する

He tore into the bag of chips.
彼はポテトチップスをすごい勢いで食べた。

The teacher was really angry and she just tore into her students
先生は本当に怒って生徒を怒鳴りつけた。

fall for

ひっかかる・好きになる

Don't fall for his lies.
彼のウソに引っかかるな。

I’ve fallen for you.
あなたを好きになった。
↑映画トップガン(1986年)で、女性教官が車で追いかける、有名なシーンのセリフの一部にこの表現がありました。

nod off

寝てしまう

It was so hot in the room that the students started nodding off.
部屋が暑かったので、生徒たちはうとうとし始めた。

gear up

準備をする

I'm gearing up for a wonderful summer vacation.
素敵な夏休みを過ごすために、準備を進めています。

tuck in(to)

ねかしつける・いっぱい食べる

She tucked her child into the bed.
彼女は子どもをねかしつけた。

He tucked into the dinner.
彼は夕食をお腹いっぱい食べた。
（↑おそらくイギリス英語・オーストラリア英語）

break away

抜け出す

We saw some birds flying, and then one broke away from the rest of the group and became and went solo.
何羽かの鳥が飛んでいるのが見えたが、一羽が他のグループから離れ、単独で飛んで行った。
