Yesterday I spoked with staff members of a Danish restaurant who were in Kyoto to prepare their pop-up restaurant. They said , they noticed many fine restaurants are small with around 20 seats while exploring the food culture in Kyoto, and they were amazed at how chefs in Kyoto create a friendly rivalry.

One of the things that surprised them was that the chefs provide ad cards of restaurants that the chef's friends run. Compared to other big gastronomy cities such as New York or Tokyo, chefs in Kyoto value more about intimacy and good customer relations more than competition . Most prefer to build an intimate connection with customers who appreciate their artistic creations. They even introduce their favorable customers to their friend's chefs to develop stronger ties with their rivals and customers. As a result, they generate a sustainable and local gastronomy network.

An  annual art and craft show "Kosho-ten," which means" light and figure," showcases works of  artisans from thirteen genres, such as pottery, sculpture, paper, wire knitting, yuzen kimono dyeing, glass, and garden design . All to be held at an old house; machiya.

Although they sell their work at the site, the event is not driven by commercial motives. Instead, they attempt to allow visitors to feel the living space beautiful and comfortable.

Craft item is not an art piece that exists independently. However, they look valuable when it incorporates with other craft items. Craft artisans also know that they need to encourage viewers to use them ,teaching the beauty of handicrafts.Until this tenth exhibition, exhibitors haveee worked each other to revitalize overall craft industries while creating an organic network to be sustainable.

This seems to be a key to survival for creators with craftsmenspirit in Kyoto, regardless of field.
