Eric Andersen & Joni Mitchell, 'Blue River' (Live at McCabe's, 1990)

Eric: I went back to L.A. and wrote 𝐵𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑅𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟. Joni Mitchell heard the song, loved it. She started singing with it. She loved the title. She was working on the Blue album. She wanted me to lend her the title for the album. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲. But, I didn’t let her have it (laughs). https://folkworks.org/article/eric-andersens-river-of-blue/ 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 Old man go to the river To drop his bale of woes He could go if he wanted to It's just a boat to row, you know Listen to me now Blue river keep right on rollin' (blue river keep on rollin') All along the shoreline (all along the shoreline) Keep us safe from the deep and the dark (keep us safe from the deep) 'Cause we don't want to stray too far Spent the day with my old dog Mo Down an old dirt road And what he's thinking, Lord, I don't know But for him bet the time must go so slow Don't you know Blue river keep right on rollin' (blue river keep on rollin') All along the shoreline (all along the shoreline) Keep us safe from the deep and the dark (keep us safe from the deep) 'Cause we don't want to stray too far Young Rob stands with his ax in his hand Believin' that the crops are in Fire wood stacked ten by ten For the wife, the folks, the kids All of the kin, and a friend Listen to me now Blue river keep right on rollin' (blue river keep on rollin') All along the shoreline (all along the shoreline) Keep us safe from the deep and the dark (keep us safe from the deep) 'Cause we don't want to stray too far No, we don't want to stray too far

Joni Mitchell, 'Both Sides Now' (2021 Remaster) [Official Audio]

そこから、最終連の 'It's life's illusions I recall' という、まるで人生をホログラムと観るような着想にまで至る 冒頭、一聴すると 'Rows and flows' と聞こえるが、本当は 'Rows and floes'. 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐨𝐰 Rows and floes of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I've looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 From up and down, and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show You leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take, and still somehow It's love's illusions I recall I really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud To say "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way But now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads, they say I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all I've looked at life from both sides now From up and down and still somehow 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲'𝘀 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 I really don't know life at all

[SBD]Joni Mitchell, NYC, Feb 1972
