4/9/24 - Generation of reading glasses

It seems that more and more apps are created for smartphones and the functionality available for the PC has been decreasing. This trend is often frustrating as I prefer using my PC to my smartphone, especially for studying and working. 

 Even though I acknowledge the convenience of smartphones, their screen is too small for me to read the text comfortably. I have eye problems and require reading glasses because of my aged eyes. Out of curiosity, I investigated the number of people aged 50 or over in Japan, assuming they also need reading glasses. 

I came across one website stating that in 2024 Japan will be the first country where more than half the population is 50 or older, which was quite surprising. This means almost one in two Japanese people need reading glasses like me. 

I hope that website and app designers pay more attention to this demographic shift and create more user-friendly websites and apps.

P.S. 最近私がよく使うサイトなどでPCで使える機能 (functionality available for the PC) が減ってきていて (decrease) スマホのアプリに移行しているようです。網膜剝離のせいで左目ではほとんど文字が判読できず、さらに年齢のせいで老眼の私にはスマホで文字を読むのは結構つらいです。

「高齢化が進む日本では、老眼の人だって多いはず」、と思って調べたところ「2024年日本は50歳以上の人口が半分以上を占める初めての国となる」という記事を見つけました。となると、約二人に一人 (one in two) が老眼鏡 (reading glasses) が必要そうですね（個人差がありますが）。もっとこうした人口動態の変化 (demographic shift) を意識してウェブサイトやアプリを作ってほしいものです…。

ちなみに私が英訳の勉強のため、PCでよく観ていた「ニュースで学ぶ現代英語」もアプリになるようです。iPadを買えばアプリでも大画面で観られるのでしょうが、もう観なくなりそうです。語学のストリーミングもスマホだと電池がすぐ消費してしまうので、時間があるときはPCで聴いていたのになくなってしまったようす。（なのでSIMなしの iPhoneを語学用にしました。）
