“Research fare in 2019”

On November 15th, Research fare was held in school of policy studies Kwansei gakuin university.

I participated as a presenter. My topic is dropped out students in Cambodia. The reasons of why I choose this topic is my experience in Cambodia. When I stayed there as an intern student, I had an opportunity to talk with dropped out students. I knew that there’re many kids who can not go to school in the world, but when I talked with her, I felt impatient that I can not do anything for them and frustration towards the inequality of education opportunities. Then, I started research about dropped out students and the policies for them. There are not many people who interested in Cambodia and know about Cambodian education and problems. That’s why I want to share to everyone.

First, I want you to know the data. There are 88% of students who graduate from elementary school. However, only 46.1% of students are enter the middle school. Not only that, almost 20% of middle school students are going to drop out. The causes of drop out from school are money, bad access, parents’ understand for education, and more. Making money to help their family is the most serious problem and difficult to solve.
Actually, the middle school that I worked has problem with dropout students. The number of dropout students are increasing.

There are some policies to solve this problem. For example, the Ministry of education in Cambodia and UNESCO had started the Tablet classes from March, 2019. Students can learn 11 subjects from this online program. Personally, this program is really beneficial. Because, every dropped out students can use it equally, wherever and whenever they want.
There are other more solution to solve this problem. In end of the presentation, I also did the policy recommendation. The content is the online classes like UNESCO and the Ministry of education in Cambodia already did. However, the different point is tool. I recommended the radio and smartphones’ app. The reason of why I choose them is everyone has the radio or smartphone to get information. When I went to the village that has no water supply, they have a radio to get news. If education is provided by the radio or smartphones’ app, more students can study whenever and wherever they want. The education opportunities would be more equal.

After I presented, professors gave me some feedbacks. One professor said that “How can we change the thinking of parents that they don’t need education for their kids?” For that question, I answered “Create the good relationship, then educate parents”. However, the most difficult point is a tool. After the presentation, the other teacher talked about the religion in Southeast Asia. Then I realized that monk is respected from many Cambodian people. So, the education by monk is very effective.

I am honor and thanks to have opportunity to present about my research for many people and have more learning. I would study more to solve this problem and my future dream.
