翻訳者仲間に勧められ「ChatGPT翻訳術」という本を読みました。言うまでもなく、ChatGPT４の驚異的な技術は、翻訳者にとっては脅威であります。

本書はひと言でいうならば、ChatGPTを使って日英翻訳をするためのプロンプト集。多くのビジネス雑誌でも頻繁にプロンプトの重要性が取り上げられていますが、この本には日本語を英語に翻訳するために有効なプロンプト、そしてそれを使う際に気を付けるべきことが詳述してあります。

「翻訳術」というタイトルから、私の本業に関係のある本かと思いきや、日常的に英文を読み書きするビジネスパーソンにも役に立つ一般書でしたので皆さんにご紹介します！

本書を読んで、少なくとも今の時点では、私が手掛けるエンターテインメントの分野においてAIが人間のレベルに追いつくのはまだ先のことだと分かりました。むしろChatGPTを使って翻訳のスキルを磨くことができると確信しました。さらには英語を読める人なら、ChatGPTを使えば英語が正確に書けるようになるだろう、という事実も私に希望を与えてくれました。

私は翻訳会社を経営して15年になりますが、この５年ほどで国外のクライアントからの依頼が増えました。国境を越えた取引には、日常的に英語でのやり取りが発生します。電話会議やインタビューなどもありますが、大抵のコミュニケーションはメールで行います。日本語で書くのに比べて時間のかかる英語ライティングが少しずつストレスになっていました。基本的な文章は書けるのですが、ビジネスのやり取り、特に交渉事になると「この言い回しは適切なのかな？」とニュアンスに関する疑問が浮かぶたびに辞書やネットで調べ始め、長い時間を費やしてしまうこともしばしば。

しかし、本書にあるプロンプトを使って自分の書いた英文をチェックすれば、自信を持って英語で交渉ができるだろうと思えたのです。ChatGPTは、正しいプロンプトを使えば、英米との文化の違いを考慮して、相手の視点に立って文章を構築してくれます。また、ChatGPTはことわざや慣用句、俗語にも精通している印象です。

もっとスピーディーに正確に英文が書きたいと思っている方、プロに頼むまでもない、「理解できればいい」程度の翻訳を安価に仕上げたいと思っている方（世界に情報発信したいインバウンド向け事業者や、自分の文章や動画を日常的に発信するクリエイター）は、本書を読んで、実際にChatGPT4を使ってみることをお勧めします。

Instead, I became confident that I can improve my translation skills using ChatGPT. Furthermore, for those who can read English, using ChatGPT can make you write English accurately, which gave me hope.

I've been running a translation company for 15 years, and in the past five years, I've seen an increase in requests from clients overseas. Cross-border transactions involve daily communication in English. While phone conferences and interviews are common, most of our communication happens through emails. Writing in English, especially for business purposes and negotiations, used to be a bit stressful for me. I could handle basic sentences, but when it came to business discussions and negotiations, I often questioned if my expressions were appropriate. Each time I had doubts about nuances, I would start looking things up in dictionaries and on the internet, spending a considerable amount of time.

However, with the prompts provided in this book, I felt confident that I could use them to check my own English texts, allowing me to negotiate confidently in English. ChatGPT, with the right prompts, can take into account the cultural differences between Japan and English-speaking countries, constructing sentences from the perspective of the other party. Additionally, ChatGPT seems to be well-versed in idioms, proverbs, and colloquialisms.

If you're looking to write English more quickly and accurately or if you want to produce inexpensive translations that don't require a professional translator (for inbound businesses looking to communicate with the world or creators who frequently publish their content in various languages), I recommend reading this book and trying out ChatGPT-4 for yourself.
