The Archers で学ぶ英語表現 (1)

2024/04/12放送回のBBCラジオドラマ The Archers からメモした表現。

I cannot for the life of me…

ウィズダム英和辞典第４版 (s.v. life) によれば、cannot, couldn't, wouldn't を伴って、どうしても・・・ないという意味になる。通例、seeなどの認識・思考を表す動詞が後続するがここでは省略されている。

If it is, then my bad. 

「もしそうなら、悪いのは自分だ」といったところか。

Well, you haven't really been on the best from all week.

「なんだか、今週ずっと本調子じゃないね」という感じか。新和英大辞典 (s.v., ベストコンディション) では、be in one's best (physical) condition / be at one's best / be in top form が掲載。

We all need to be on top form for the vet inspection. 

be on top form については上記参照。

Don't get carried away.

「落ち着いて」というときの表現。

Do you still want a hand weaning the rest of the lounge?

a hand weaning は比喩的な意味で使われていると思われる。ラウンジで何かしら作業していて、手助けが必要かどうかを確認しているのだと解釈した。こういうのが難しいですね……。

Which is what? 

何がどうなってるの?という表現。

Well done. Looks like we've got ourselves a bargain.

get a bargain で「掘り出し物を手に入れる」(OLEX2, s.v., ほりだしもの)

If the seller's about, I could collect it while I'm out and about.

be out and about はここでは「仕事であちこち動き回っているときに」という感じだと思われる。If the seller's about の about はイギリス英語の用法で、「売り手が近くにいたら」ということ。

A gesture of support sort of thing. 

a gesture of X で、「～するしぐさ、意思表示」。Xにはdefiance (反抗), refusal (拒否), goodwill (善意)などがくる。

It probably means that the weaning will be late afternoon. Four-ish, maybe.

この ish の使い方は頻繁に目にする。ここでは「４時くらい」。the weaning は先ほどのa hand weaningのこと。

But I'm still miffed with you about Greg Gables.

be miffed with 人「人に腹を立てる」

You've still got to make it up to me, somehow.

make it up to 人で「人に弁償する、埋め合わせをする」。somehowとセットになるのか、『クラウン英語　イディオム辞典 (s.v. make 2)』でも We must make it up to him somehow. という例文が挙げられていた。

Just the sort of thing we should be encouraging local children to take part in, don't you think?

It is just the sort of thing that … で「…なのはまさにそれだ」。

She did say the work records and the vaccinations were in good order.

「勤務記録や予防接種はきちんとしていると言っていたんだよ」という感じ。be in good order 「きちんと整頓されている、正常な状態にある」。

As the manager, it's your job to ensure that everything is absolutely pristine for the inspection.

be absolutely pristine for … 「～のために完璧な状態にしておく」という感じだが、これは be in good order の言い換え。

I will put it all right, I promise.

put 何々 all right だが、これもここでは何々を be in good order な状態にしておきますってことですね。

No, well, you know, Chris tends to fuss over every little thing where Martha's concerned. So, well, I keep problems to myself unless I really have to.

fuss over every little thing where X is concerned 「Xのことになると大騒ぎする」。keep 何々 to myself unless I really have to 「やむを得ない場合を除いて、何々は言わないことにしている」。unless X have to はセットフレーズで覚えたほうが吉。

She had perked up.

perk up で「元気になる」

I know. I will get on top of things. I promise you.

get on top of 何々で「～を上手く処理する」。

Wow, you've got to hand it to him. 

have got to hand it to 人で「誰々の優秀さを認めないといけない」。hand it to …だけではなくて have got to と共に覚える方が良い。

Say that again.

「確かにそうだね」。You can say that again. の略式。

Well, that sounds far too stuck up to me.

be stuck up は「お高くとまっている」。ここでは、Barber culture という名前についての返答なので、「ちょっと大げさな名前じゃないか」ということを言いたいのだと思う。

-Well, you mean like fake it till you make it?
-That's it, yeah. 

fake it till you make it は「うまくいくまで、うまくいっているふりをする」ということ。

We've obviously put a lot of thought into it and we can see what you're getting at, so thank you.

what you're getting at は「あなたが言いたいこと」。この get at は「～をほのめかす」で進行形で使う。What are you getting at? 「なにがいいたいんだ」というふうに不快感を表すときに使うが、ここではそうではない。

-You can't be serious.
-I mean it. It is good they're thinking about the business.

I mean it. は I mean what I say. (冗談ではなく本気だ)ということ。

Yeah, no, that's absolute bobbins.

bobbins はイギリス英語のスラングで、つまらないもの、無価値なものという意味らしい。

Oh, I really don't want to be right about this.

「自分の思い込みであって欲しいけど」。

I'm afraid so. And in all conscience, given what she's been through this pas year, who could blame her?

in all conscience + 否定表現。ここでは「良心に照らして考えれば、誰が彼女を責められる？」という感じ。「確かに、ほんとに」という強調でも使われる (クラウン英語イディオム辞典)。

I know that's finished now, but it must have taken its toll on her.

take its toll on… で「～を苦しめる、～に損失を与える」= tell on …。

Trouble is, I've got no hard evidence. She's already fibbing to me… 

「困ったことに確証がない」の表現法。fib to 人は「人にうそをつく」。

So until I'm more certain, I'd rather keep Brian out of the loop.

Until I'm more certain, I'd rather do…「もっと確実なことが分かるまで、・・・しておく」の表現法。keep 人 out of the loop は「大事なことに関わらせないようにする」ということ。
