【備忘録】仮定法ifの省略（should, were, had）

英語の表現で、文頭のifを省いて主語と（助）動詞の語順を逆（should, were, had+主語）にした仮定法をよく見ることがあります。

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. ＝If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. （ご質問がございましたら、お気軽にお問い合わせください）

これは、接続詞ifが省略されて、shouldが前に出た倒置形です。

shouldにはifのように、「もし～」や「万が一～」といった仮定を表す意味があります。

他にも、had, wereでも同様の倒置形が起こります。

Were I in your situation, I would take that job for my career. =If I were in your situation, I would take that job for my career. (私なら、自分のキャリアのためにその仕事を受けます）

Had I known, I would have told you. = If I had known, I would have told you. （もし知っていたら話していたよ）

文の途中や先頭に「should, were, had」がきて、全体的に「何か変？」と感じたら、ifが省略された倒置かも？と考えてみるのも一つだと思います。
