LB: How did you get started in photography?



Hanzawa: When I was young, I used to hitchhike around the country and traveled around.

I got back from that trip and thought it was about time I got a decent job.

One day, when I opened the window of my lodging house, a photographer who lives next door was standing there, asking me if I needed any work. I asked him and he said, "Why don't you do some pictures?

I was trying to go to art college at the time, and I was studying sketching.

Photography is light and shadow, and so is photography.

He said, "Well, you know what?

We got to talking about how to become a photographer.

The first thing he did was to go to a professional developer and he told me to go look at his photos and he introduced me to the developer.

I thought I could do this, so I got into photography, but now that I think about it, I didn't like it.

Then I went into the studio and became a studio man, then I became that teacher's assistant, and then I found out in my third year.

It's a hell of a world we've entered.

He's a product photography pro, and he used to take catalogs of cars and electronics.

There wasn't much interest there.

That's where I decided I wanted to go all out and take a picture of a human being.

He wanted to film people living in a harsh climate. I'm young.

If I couldn't find my picture there, I thought I'd stop taking pictures... I went to India as if it was a bait and switch.

There was no one going to India then.

I've been told by my seniors that I'm aiming for advertising photography, but I'm not going to America or Europe, I'm going to India.

I was told it was suicidal, but it didn't bother me at all.



LB: That's Hanzawa-san's base, isn't it?

How many hundreds of people did you take a picture of?



Hanzawa: At first, I couldn't figure out what to shoot and how to shoot it, so I played with the hippies every day for two months and thought about it.

It's the ultimate in photography and I wonder what it is.

So I decided it was a person's face and started taking portraits, mainly of faces.

Then I shot about 500 portraits over the next five months.

It's pretty crappy looking at it now, but there's miraculously about one good photo in every two rolls. After all, it's the first time I've ever taken a picture of a person.
