美のあふれる世界で怒りは長続きしない。美しいものがありすぎるとそれに圧倒され、僕のハートは風船のように破裂しかける。そういう時は、体の緊張を解く。するとその気持ちは、雨のように胸の中を流れ、感謝の念だけが後に残る。僕の愚かな、取るに足らぬ人生への感謝の念が。たわ言に聞こえるだろう？大丈夫。いつか理解できる。
Vol.16: Reunion | 再会
ロンドンに住んでいた頃の友人が来日し、およそ10年ぶりに再会した。
日本まで会いに来てくれた友人はこれで3人目になる。1人は新婚旅行先を日本を選んでくれた。もう1人は日本人女性と結婚して日本に住むことを決めた。そして今回の友人は仕事での来日したのだった。
滞在先のホテルのロビーで待ち合わせたのだが、そこで思いがけず嬉しかったことがある。待ち合わせ場所で友人は僕よりもはやく僕を見つけてくれたのだ。
10年という月日が経っても、多くの日本人の中から僕を見つけてくれたこと。そのことがとても嬉しかった。いくつかの場所を案内し、2人でバーへ行った。
飲み、話し、そして大いに笑った。10年前がまるで昨日のことのようだった。人生がこんなにも味わい深いなんて知らなかった。

Vol.16: Reunion | 再会
“I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me, but it’s hard to stay mad when there’s so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing it all at once, and it’s too much; my heart fills up like a balloon that’s about to burst. And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold onto it. And then it flows through me like rain, and I can’t feel anything but gratitude—for every single moment of my stupid, little life. You have no idea what I’m talking about, I’m sure; but don’t worry….you will someday.”
Vol.18: Reunion | 再会
A friend from when I lived in London came to Japan, and we met again for the first time in almost ten years.
This is the third friend to come to Japan to see me - one chose Japan for his honeymoon. Another decided to marry a Japanese woman and live in Japan. And this time, the other came to Japan on business. We met in the hotel lobby where my friend was staying, and something was unexpectedly happy about that. At the meeting place, my friend found me before I did.
I was delighted that even after 10 years, he found me among so many Japanese people. I was pleased about that. I showed him some places for sightseeing, and we went to a local bar together.
We grabbed some pints, talked a lot and laughed so much that it seemed like 10 years ago. I didn't know life could be so full of flavour.
