フィンランド留学します！ってなんでフィンランド？

前回のnoteでも少し触れていた留学について、お話していきたいと思います。題名にもある通り、フィンランドに留学します！
実はこのnote留学一か月目、八月に投稿しようと思っていたのですが、だらだらとしていたらいつの間にかこんなに間が開いてしまっていました。。。

理由は大きく分けて３つ、

１ 豊かな自然に触れたい

フィンランドは森と湖の国として知られています。
私はずっと東京に住んできたので自然が豊かな場所で暮らしてみたいと思っていました。うーん、というよりも全く違う環境に飛び込んでみたいという気持ちからそう思ったのかな。

2 教育の質や幸福度の水準が高いから

フィンランドの教育は比較、競争とは無縁なのに学習到達度が「世界一」であったことで有名です。日本や韓国をはじめ、アジアの国の多くの学生は学習塾に通い、他人と競いながら点数を取っていく…というのが主流だと思います。もちろん人によってその捉え方は違いますし、それもよい経験になるのかもしれません。しかし、（これも人によって異なりますが）テスト前に点数を取るために詰め込んだ知識はその後の人生の支えにはなりにくいと思います。せっかく毎日学校に通っているのに、それが学生のためにならないのは、楽しく学ぶことができないのはもったいなさすぎると思います。
フィンランドの教育でもう一つ言われていることは落ちこぼれを作らないということ。様々な魅力があるフィンランドの学校の授業を自分自身で体感してみたいとフィンランドについての記事や本を読んでいるうちに憧れが強まりました。
そして！幸福度ランキングでも世界一位を記録したフィンランド。
ライフワークバランスの充実などでも有名。日本との違いは何なのか、比較して発見できることがたくさんありそう……とワクワクしっぱなしです。

3 第3外国語に挑戦してみたかったから

フィンランドの公用語はフィンランド語、そしてスウェーデン語です。
下に長くなってしまったのですがフィンランドに留学するに至るまでの経緯についてお話します。

留学に興味を持ち始めたのは中学１年生の冬のことでした。当時はコロナ渦真っ只中、緊急事態宣言もされていて家にいる時間が圧倒的に長く、ゆえにyoutubeをはじめとするsnsを楽しんでいました。あるとき、youtubeのおすすめに「ゆじー」さんという方の高校生のイギリス留学のvlogが流れてきて、それを見ているうちに留学への憧れが強まっていきました。(小学生の時は、両親が英語の塾に入れさせてくれようとしたのですが、英語分かんないからヤダ！と突っぱねていました。やっぱり自分の心が動かされないとだめですね。) 最初になんとなくいいなと思った国はアメリカ。中２，中３くらいからアメリカの映画やドラマを見はじめ、かっこいいなと思ったことがきっかけです。しかし、通っている学校の英語の先生にアメリカ留学を相談したところ、治安の観点からカナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドを激押しされ、どうしたもかと悩んでいました。 その後、同じ先生からまだ決めていなかった留学団体を紹介され、そちらのオリエンテーションに参加した際に「英語はあなたたちの世代にとって、必要不可欠なもの。だからあえて若いうちに違う言語に触れてみるのもいい経験になるよ。」という言葉を聞きました。そこから私の意識は英語圏外へ！ そこでなぜフィンランドを選んだのかというと…上記に記した通り、教育システムに興味があったのと、中学生の頃の英語の先生がフィンランドに留学していたことがあり、そのお話をよく聞いていたことでほかの国と比べると親近感が湧いていたからです。

そして現在、留学して三か月を過ぎましたが、本当にフィンランドに留学にきてよかったと思っています！次回以降のnoteで留学生活についてお話していこうと思います。ここまでお読みいただきありがとうございました：）

I am going to study in Finland! But why Finland?
 I wanted to share about my study abroad journey which I briefly mentioned in last note and was planning to post in Auguat but time slipped away, here we are.
Three main reasons
1. I want to experience rich nature
Finland is well known as the land of forests and lakes. Having lived in Tokyo for long, I have always wanted to try living in a place with abundant nature….

Well, maybe it is more about I have eagerly wished to dive into an entirely different environment and experiencing something new.

2 The high quality of education and the level of happiness
Finland’ｓ education is famous for being ”world-class” despite being free from comparition and competetion. In many Asian countries including China, Korea, Japan, it is common for students to attend cram schools, competing with others to achive high scores. While this approach may be seen as a valuable experience for some, cramming knowlage solely for test scores might not necessarily for life afterward. It could be a missed oppotunity when students attend school everyday, but the education does not contribute signigicantly to thier personal growth.
Another aspct emphasized in Finland’s education is the effort to avoid leaving students behind. As I read articles and books about Finland, I became more firsthand the various charms of Finnish shools.
And! Finland, which also holds the top spot in happiness rankings. Renowned for its fulfilling work-life balance, among other things. I am really excited about discovering the differences between Japan and Finlad and all the things I might uncover.

3 I also wanted to challenge myself with an enritely new third language
The official language of Finland are Finnish and Swedish. Below, I will share the journey that led me to study abroad in Finland.

My interest in studying abroad began in the winter of my first year in junior high school. At that time, amidst the COVIT-19 pandemic and with a state of emergency in place, I spent an overwhelmingly long time at home, enjoying platforms like Youtube and other social media. One day, a vlog by a high school student named ”yuzzy” about studying in the UK appeared in my Youtube recommendations. As I watched it, my admiration of studying abroad grew stronger. (when I was an elementary school student, my parents tried to enroll me in an English cram school, but I refused, saying I did not want to because I did not understand English. It turns out your heart needs to be moved for things to work out.)
The first country I vaguely liked  was the United State. Starting from around the second and third year of junior high, I began watching American movies and dramas and got intrested. However, when I consulted my English teacher about studying in the U.S., he strongly recomended Canada, Australia, New Zealand for safety reasons. I was turn about what to do. Later, same teacher introduced me to  a study abroad organization which I had not decided on yet, and during their orientation, I heard the words, ”English is essential for your generation. So, intentionally exposing yourself to a different language while you are young can be a valuable experience” from there, my focus shifted beyond English-speaking countries! As for why I chose Finland… as mentioned ealier, I was introgued by its educatin system, an my English from junior high had studied in Finland, sharering stories that made me feel connection compared to other countries.

Now, after three months of studying abroad, I truly feel that coming to Finland was the right decision! In the next notes, I will share more about my study abroad life. Thank you so much for reading this far!
