アジアでも始まったリベンジ旅行。日本は？

ここシンガポール、“リベンジ”旅行による市場回復がいよいよヤバいことになってきてます。

先日フライトを変更するためにシンガポール航空にコンタクトしたら、なんと、、「問い合わせが殺到してるため、15営業日内に折り返すよう努力します」とのEmailが送られてきました。今日ですでに12日がたちましたが、まだ連絡もらえてません。。

先週金曜、「WiT – Web In Travel」のミニカンファレンスが開かれましたが、「WiT Japan & North Asia」でも講演してくれたGoogleのHermione Joyeがシェアしてくれたデータによると、シンガポールの海外旅行需要は先日の国境全面開放のニュースを受けた後コロナ前の2019年をも上回る需要回復（107％）をみせたとのこと。さらに、シンガポールのみならず、東南アジア、オセアニアを含めたアジア太平洋地域もほぼ全ての国で急速な需要回復をみせはじめており、最も回復が早いオーストラリアの海外旅行需要は3月時点で2019年比96％まで回復してるとのことでした。

ここにきてグローバル市場における旅行需要回復は本当に力強いと実感しています。当社のグローバル事業「Trip101」は先月、2019年比でなんと6.2倍、前月比で28％増の流通総額を記録し、成長がさらに加速してます。

こうした中で日本は世界で完全に取り残された国になってしまっています。

先日トラベルボイスにも記事でとりあげられていましたが、アメリカのトラベル業界専門メディア“Skift”が発表した「トラベル市場リカバリーインデックス」によると、2022年3月時点で世界各国の旅行需要をコロナ前の2019年対比でみてみた場合、日本はコロナ前を100とした場合、“46.5”と香港（34.4）に次いで世界で最も低い回復度となってしまっています。戦時下のロシア（60.1）、厳しい“ゼロコロナ政策”をとる中国（51.3）よりもビハインドしてしまっています。当社の国内事業「トラベルjp」も、GWを前に一定の需要回復がみられてはいますが、本格回復にはまだまだ遠い状況が続いています。

世界は、すでに「国境開放フェーズ」から次の「渡航のための規制緩和・撤廃フェーズ」に入っています。直近、シンガポールは来週月曜から海外からの渡航者による渡航前のコロナテスト義務を撤廃しました。タイも到着後のテストを廃止することを発表しています。

こんな世界情勢下でもまだ鎖国が続く日本、せめて国境だけは早期に全面開放してもらいたいです！

Singapore Airlines has blown my mind. I got this email from them 12 days ago when I sent them an online inquiry for changing my flight (since they didn’t allow me to do it on their website).

“We are currently encouraging high volume and will do our best to respond to you within 15 (15!) working days.”

As of today, I haven’t heard back from them..

While this is certainly a crazy, disappointing experience for me, I’m also pleased to take it as a great example of the strong recovery of the travel market happening now around the region.

On Friday at WiT’s Asia Arising show, Hermonie Joye, Google shared the data that proves this encouraging trend. Singapore showed the strong recovery in its outbound travel demand which hit 107% level vs. 2019, soon after it opened its borders. All other countries in the region are not in an exception. Australia is leading the pack. Its outbound travel demand has reached 96% of what it had in 2019.

Global wide travel recovery is REAL. Last month, our TRIP101 has recorded all-time high numbers. Its GMVs, or Gross Booking Values, grew at 6.2x vs. 2019 and 28% MoM. Growth is certainly accelerating at an enormous pace.

One of my remaining concerns now is the market in Japan, my home country. Skift published the global travel recovery index numbers for March 2022 the other day, in which Japan is ranked as the worst nation in the world, after Hong Kong. Its travel demand is still lagging at 46.5% vs. 2019, even behind Russia (60.1) under the war, and China (51.3) under the strict “zero Covid strategy”. We are able to confirm this unfortunate trend through our TRAVEL jp business performances..

As Singapore announced no longer pre-boarding Covid test as a requirement and Thailand decided to get rid of on-arrival tests, the world is now moving on from “opening borders” to “eliminating frictions” for travel. I can’t hope enough that Japan, along with a few other countries in North Asia, will follow the steps soonest.
