Not really a grid city
札幌中心部のほとんどの道路は碁盤の目状に整備されている。それは機能的で合理的な都市デザインで、街全体をひとつの巨大な彫刻のように見せている。そんな街の中にも例外的に、曲がった川が流れ、それに沿って道路や橋が碁盤の目とは無関係に作られている地区がある。夕刻のその光景は、他の都市ではごく普通のものかもしれないが、札幌ではあまり見慣れない落ち着いた風情を醸している。
Most streets in central Sapporo are laid out in a grid pattern. It is a functional and rational urban design that makes the entire city look like one giant sculpture. There is an exception to this rule, however, where a winding river flows through the city, and roads and bridges are built along it, unrelated to the grid pattern. This scene in the early evening may be quite normal in other cities, but it creates a quite calm atmosphere that is not often seen in Sapporo.
