Kualoa Ranch

Long time no see! Sorry, I couldn't write this note for long time...
but I will restart to write for my English study. Please bear with me.

Today I will write about Kualoa Ranch, that I learned about on October!

Kualoa Ranch is the place where legends were made in.  It takes about 50 minutes from Waikiki by car. It is secluded from the world.
It is popular as the location site of Hollywood movies, TV and commercial video.
At Kualoa Ranch, we can do horse riding, shooting, jungle tour, ocean voyaging tour and so on. There is also the private beach.

■History

There is a small uninhabited island on the east side of Oahu. Hawaiian people called "Mokolii Island", it means "a small island" in Hawaiian language.
It is said that Hi'iaka got rid of the big lizard and throw the tail into the bay, it became this island.
There is Kualoa Ranch at a place where such a legends of the gods remain.

The history of Kualoa Ranch started from 1850. Dr. Gerrit P. Judd, who is the adviser of Kamehameha III, got a vast lands. His son got fishing rights and the island. The son and his son-in-low, Wilder, started sugar cane cultivation. Business was doing well.

But unhappiness came. Wilder's son had accident and died. Dry weather hit Kualoa. In 1871 suger cane factory ended.

In 1900s, Kualoa started stock farming. It is the start of Kualoa Ranch.
But in WWⅡ the ranch came into the ownership of army. They made a base in Kualoa.

After war, Kualoa return to owner. It is a new start of Kualoa Ranch.

In 1970s the horseback riding facility was made, in 1980s other activities was add. Kualoa Ranch became a famous activity center.
