The Kumulipo

ハワイの伝説をリサーチしていく中で、ハワイの創世神話についても触れました。
Creation mythology in Hawaii is called “The Kumulipo”.

I found some stories about creation of world.
In all of these stories Man was made before Woman. At first, Man was made and Woman was made from a part of Man’s body.

●Creation of human

In the ancient Hawaii there are four gods, - Kū, Lono, Kāne and Kanaloa.
They came from somewhere far away.
When they arrived at the island called Mokapu, they started making human.

Kāne kneaded mud and made the shape. Kanaloa tidied it.
Then the first man was born. He was raised by gods.

One day, when he walked outside, he noticed that a black shadow was following him. He named the shadow “Aka”.

Another day, while he was sleeping, Gods split his body and took woman out of his body. After he woke up, he met her and he thought she was Aka!

These two persons are ancestor of Hawaiian.

※今日、これを書くのに改めて調べて、ハワイ王国最後の女王・リリウオカラニが英訳したという「クムリポ」のページを見つけたよ・・。(まだ読めてないですが。)

●Story about the first human

The name of the first man is Kumuhonua. The first woman is Lalohonua.
"Kumu" means opening, starting. "Honua" means the earth, ground. "Lalo" means the bottom.

They met seabirds. Woman was enticed by seabird to eat a holy fruit. They ate the forbidden fruit.
Man was sentences to death. Woman went mad and became a seabird at all.

I think some of Hawaiian legends are similar to Christian stories.
These stories mixed in.

●Four gods in Hawaii

Kū :the god of forest
Lono:the god of farming
Kāne:the god of creation
Kanaloa:the god of sea

Kāne created the world from Ipu.
※"Ipu" is a gourd in Hawaiian language.
