トンプソン先生の話　
おはようございます
シドニーのクリスマスは
面白いのは反対側だから
夏なんですね
空港の飾りもあまり
派手ではなかった。

今日は寒いので
動いいた方がいいかも
しれないですね。

今年も送ります。
・
クリスマスにふさわしい、１つの実話です。
「５年生のクラスを持つことになった
トンプソン先生の話」

トンプソン先生は、
５年生のクラスを受け持つことになり、
初日に生徒達の前に立ち、
嘘をつきました。
.
彼女は生徒達を見渡し、
「あなた達を全て同じように愛していますよ」
と言ったのです。
.
でも、それは不可能なことでした。
なぜなら
.
最前列の席にうずくまっている
テディ・ストダード
という男の子がいたからです。
.
トンプソン先生は
その１年前からテディのことを
知っていました。
.
そして彼が他の子供達と
上手く遊べないことも。
.
それだけでなく、
彼の身なりはいつも汚く、
お風呂を必要としている状態でした。
.
そしてテディは、
時には周囲の人に不快な態度を
とることもありました。
その様子はあまりにもひどく、
.
トンプソン先生は
赤ペンでテディの解答用紙に
大きな×を書くことに喜びを
感じることさえありました。
.
用紙には大きく「F」（落点）
と書くようになりました……
.
トンプソン先生の学校では
クラスの生徒の過去の記録を
見ることが義務付けられていました。

彼女はテディの記録を見るのを避け、
一番の最後になって
ようやく手に取りました。

記録を読んだ彼女は驚きました。
彼の１年の先生はこう書いていました。

「テディはとても楽しく、
知恵のある子です。
.
彼は正確に作業をし、
礼儀正しい子です。
.
彼といると喜びを感じます」
2年の先生の報告はこうでした。

「テディは素晴らしい生徒です。
クラスの皆からもとても
好かれています。
.
でも、最近彼のお母さんの具合が悪く
、とても悩んでいます。
家での生活は大変なようです」

3年の先生の報告です。
「お母さんの死は彼にとって
とても辛かったと思います。
.
彼は一生懸命に頑張っているけれど、
お父さんはあんまり彼に
関心を示していないようです。
.
何とかしなければ、
彼は大きな影響を受けてしまうでしょう」
.
そして4年の先生の報告を読みました。
.
テディはいつも内にこもっていて、
学校に関心を示しません。
友達もいなくて、
時々クラスで居眠りをします」
.
この4つの報告書を読み終えた
トンプソン先生は何が問題であるかが
理解できました。
.
そして、彼女は自分のこれまでの態度を
恥ずかしく感じました。
.
クリスマス会の日、
クラスの生徒達が先生のために
沢山のプレゼントを持ってきました。
.
それはどれも美しい、
華やかな包装紙で包まれていました。
テディの以外は。
.
テディからのプレゼントは
茶色の紙袋に無造作に入れてありました。
トンプソン先生は心の痛みを感じながら
袋を開けました。
.
その袋から、石がいくつか外れて、
無くなっているブレスレットと
香水が４分の１入っている
小瓶が出てきたとき、
.
クラスの子供達が
笑い出しました。
.
でも、トンプソン先生が
「まぁ、綺麗なブレスレットね！」
と言い、香水を手首につけると、
クラスの笑いは消えていきました。
.
その日のクラスの最後に
テディはトンプソン先生のところに行き、
「先生、今日の先生はお母さんと同じ香りがするよ」
と言いました。
.
子供達が帰った後、
トンプソン先生は１時間以上、
机で泣きました。
.
その日から、
トンプソン先生は国語、
そして数学を教えるのを止めました。
.
代わりに子供達に本当の
「教育」を始めました。
トンプソン先生はテディに
特に注意を向けるようになりました。
.
テディに教えれば教えるほど
彼は生き生きとし、変わってきました。
.
励ませば励ますほど、
彼の反応は早くなりました。
.
そして一年の終わり、
テディはクラスの中でも上位の成績でした。

テディはクラスの中で賢い子達の
一人になっていたのです。

トンプソン先生がその一年の始めに
「皆を同じように愛しています」
とついた嘘は意味が変わり、

テディは「先生のお気に入り」
の一人になっていました。

一年経ったころ、トンプソン先生に
お手紙がきました。
.
テディからのもので、
トンプソン先生が今までの先生の中で
一番最高の先生であると書いてありました。

それから６年が経ち、
テディからまたお手紙が届きました。
高校をクラスの２番の成績で
卒業できたと書いてありました。
.
そして、これまでの中でも、
やはりトンプソン先生が一番の先生だった
と書いてありました。
.
それから4年が経ち、
テディから手紙が届きます。
.
4年間辛いこともありましたが、
優秀な成績で大学を卒業することになった
という報告でした。
.
そして、トンプソン先生は今でも
人生で一番の先生であると書いてありました。
.
それから、更に4年が経ち、
テディから手紙が届きました。
大学を卒業してから、さらに大学院に行き、
頑張ったことが書いてありました。
.
今でもトンプソン先生が
誰よりも一番の先生だったと
書いてありましたが、
.
今度は手紙の最後に書いてある
テディの名前が、少し長くなっていました。
.
テディではなく、
テアドル・F・ストダード医師と
サインされていました。
.
この話はここで終わりません。

その春また手紙が届いたのです。
テディは素敵な女性と出会ったと
書いてきました。
.
そしてその女性と結婚することも
書いてありました。
.
彼のお父さんが数年前に
亡くなっていることを説明し、
親代わりとしてトンプソン先生に
結婚式に出てほしいと書いてありました。
.
もちろんトンプソン先生は
喜んで出席しました。
.
そしてあの時テディからプレゼントされた
ブレスレットをはめ、
.
あの時にもらった、
お母さんと同じ香水を探し、
つけて行きました。
.
結婚式で二人は抱き合い、
テディはトンプソン先生の耳元で
言いました、
.
「先生、僕のことを信じてくれて
ありがとうございました。
.
僕が大事な存在であること、
そして世の中に貢献できることを
教えてくれて感謝しています」
.
トンプソン先生は涙ながらに言いました。
「いいえテディ、それは違うのよ。
.
私にも出来ることがあると、
あなたが私に教えてくれたの。
.
私はあなたが現れるまで、
教えるということの意味を
何も知らなかったのよ」

あげることなのですね。

The story of Mrs Thompson,
.

Ms Thompson was assigned a Year 5 class
and on her first day stood in front of
her pupils and lied to them. She looked over
at her students and said,
'I love you all the same' .
But it was impossible . Because . .
because there was a boy,
Teddy Stoddard, cowering in the front row seat.
Mr Thompson had known Teddy for a year.
And that he didn't play well with
the other children. Not only that,
but his appearance was always dirty
and in need of a bath.
And Teddy was sometimes unpleasant
to those around him. His behaviour
was so bad that .
.
Miss Thompson even
took pleasure in writing a large X on
Teddy's answer sheet with a red pen.
He began to write a large 'F'
(failing grade) on the paper: .......
At Ms Thompson's school, she was
required to look at the past records
of the pupils in her class.
She avoided looking at
Teddy's record and only picked it up
at the very end.
hen she read the records she was amazed.
His year 1 teacher wrote: .
'Teddy is a very happy and wise child.
He works accurately and is polite.
He is a joy to be around.'
His Year 2 teacher reported.
'Teddy is a great student.
He is well liked by everyone in his class.
But recently his mum has been unwell and
he is very distressed.
Life at home is very difficult for him".
'I think his mum's death was very hard for him.
He tries very hard but
his father doesn't seem to pay much attention to him.
If something is not done,
he will be greatly affected.'
And the Year 4 teacher's report read.
Teddy is always withdrawn and doesn't
show any interest in school.
He has no friends and sometimes
falls asleep in class'.
After reading these four reports,
Ms Thompson understood what the problem was.
And she felt ashamed of her previous attitude .
On the day of the Christmas party,
the pupils in the class brought
many presents for the teacher.
They were all wrapped in beautiful,
festive wrapping paper.
Except for Teddy's . Teddy's gift
was placed haphazardly in a brown paper bag.
Dr Thompson opened the bag with heartache . .
when the bag revealed a bracelet
with some stones dislodged and missing,
and a vial containing a quarter of perfume.
The children in the class burst out laughing.
But Ms Thompson said, 'Well,
that's a beautiful bracelet!'
and when she put the perfume on her wrist,
the laughter in the class faded away .
At the end of class that day, Teddy went up
to Ms Thompson and said, 'Teacher,
you smell just like your mother today'.
After the children left, Ms Thompson cried
at her desk for over an hour. From that day on,
Ms Thompson stopped teaching
language and then maths. Instead,
she began to give the children a real
'education'. Mr Thompson began to pay special
attention to Teddy. The more he taught Teddy,
the more he came alive and changed.
The more she encouraged him, the quicker
he responded. At the end of the year,
Teddy was at the top of his class.
Teddy had become one of the smartest
kids in the class. The lie that
Mr Thompson had told at the beginning of
the year that he loved everyone equally
had a different meaning.
Teddy had become one of the 'teacher's
favourites'. After a year,
Ms Thompson received a letter.
It was from Teddy and said that
Mr Thompson was the best teacher
he had ever had . Six years later,
I received another letter from Teddy.
He wrote that he had graduated from high school
with the second best grades in his class.
He also wrote that Mr Thompson was still
the best teacher he had ever had.
Four years later, I received a letter
from Teddy. Four years later,
Teddy writes to me to say that he has had a
difficult four years, but that
he is graduating from university with honours.
He also wrote that Mr Thompson is
still the best teacher
he has ever had in his life.
Four more years passed, and I received a letter
from Teddy. He wrote that after graduating
from university,
he went on to further postgraduate studies
and worked hard. He wrote that
Mr Thompson was still the best teacher
he ever had, better than anyone else, but .
Now Teddy's name at the end of the letter was a
little longer . It was signed
Dr Theadle F. Stoddard, not Teddy.
The story does not end here .　
That spring I received another letter.
Teddy wrote that he had met a nice lady.
And that he was going to marry her.
He explained that his father had died a
few years earlier and asked Dr Thompson
to attend the wedding as a substitute parent.
Of course, Dr Thompson was happy to attend.
He then put on the bracelet Teddy had given
him that day and . She found the same perfume
that her mother had given her that day and wore it.
At the wedding they embraced and Teddy said in
Dr Thompson's ear. 'Thank you, Doctor,
for believing in me. Thank you for showing me
that I matter and that I can make a difference.
Dr Thompson said tearfully. 'No Teddy,
that's not true. You showed me that there
is something I can do. I didn't know anything about
what it meant to teach until you came along.'

quoted in many places.
The most important contribution a teacher
can make to his or her students is to believe in them,
to tell them, 'You can do it'.
