仁和寺の仁王門で守護神「金剛力士像」が睨みをきかせる 　The guardian deity "Nio statue" glares at the Nioumon gate of Ninna-ji Temple

世界文化遺産の御室仁和寺(おむろにんなじ)の境内入口に聳え立つのが「二王門」。知恩院の「三門」、南禅寺の「山門」と並び京都の三大門の一つといわれている。江戸時代の初期に、徳川家光の寄進により建てられたものである。

The "Nioumon" towers at the entrance to the precincts of Omuro Ninna-ji Temple, a world cultural heritage site. It is said to be one of the three major gates of Kyoto along with the "Sanmon" of Chion-in Temple and the "Sanmon" of Nanzen-ji Temple. It was built in the early Edo period with the donation of Tokugawa Iemitsu.

その二王門の左右には仏教の守護神「金剛力士像」が安置されている。仁和寺、二王門の金剛力士像については作者などの詳細は不明のようだ。建造されたのは、門の建立と同じ江戸初期と思われる。広大な境内の穏やかな佇まいとは裏腹に、二王の形相が実に迫力に満ちている。
金剛力士像（二王像）は見てのとおり像容が上半身裸形で筋骨隆々。二神一対で、右側の像（阿形）は左手に仏敵を退散させる武器である金剛杵（こんごうしょ）を手に一喝するように口を開け、左側の像（吽形）は右手の指を開き、怒気を帯びて口を結んでいる。

In a pair of two gods, the statue on the right (Agyo) opens its mouth in the left hand as if holding a weapon called Kongosho, which is a weapon to disperse Buddhist enemies, and the statue on the left (Ungyo) open the finger of the right hand and angry and tied the mouth.

二王像(金剛力士像)の裏側(境内から見える)には唐獅子(からじし)像が安置されている。門の前後に像が安置されているのは珍しい。二王門の大きさのあかしなのだろうか。
少し唐獅子(獅子)についてふれると、唐獅子とは神獣である。元は仏陀の一族を守護するインドライオンをモチーフに造られ、中国に伝わり美術的、装飾的に図案化された。古代中国でこの世の動物達の長だと考えられた特別な霊獣の代表で、よいこと、めでたいことの前兆である瑞兆(ずいちょう)の瑞獣とされ、美術品の意匠として勇壮な姿で描かれてきた。

唐獅子像(阿形／吽形)

近くで眺めると、420年ほど前に建造された金剛力士像は時代の風雨により損傷も見えるが、迫力はひしひしと伝わってくる。時を経ても、この形相は見事なほど美しい。次の時代にもまた変わらぬ姿で立ち続ける。
