圓教寺「壽量院」の精進食に魅せられ ! Fascinated by the vegetarian diet at the “Jyuryo-in” of the Engyo-ji Temple

先日、アマゾンプライムで「ラストサムライ」を観た。ご存じトム・クルーズ主演で脇に渡辺謙を配し全世界に配給されたハリウッド映画。そのロケ地として話題になった兵庫県姫路市にある天台宗書寫山圓教寺(えんぎょうじ)を改めて懐かしく思い出し、以前に訪ねた時のことを書いた記事をリメイクした。

The other day, I saw "Last Samurai" at Amazon Prime. As you know, a Hollywood movie starring Tom Cruise with Ken Watanabe beside him and distributed worldwide. I reminded me of the Tendai sect book Engyo-ji Temple in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, which became a hot topic for filming, and remade an article that I wrote about when I visited there.

当日は、山登りに最高の天気だった。少し額に汗をかき、息を荒げながら20分程度歩いた。これでも私にとっては山登りである。姫路からバスに揺られ30分、書写山ロープウエー乗り場に到着。それからロープウエーで書写山へ。この書写山自体が圓教寺の境内になる。

The day was the best weather to climb a mountain. I sweated a little on my forehead and walked for about 20 minutes, breathing. This is still a mountain climb for me. A 30-minute bus ride from Himeji arrived at the Shoshazan Ropeway Station. Then take the ropeway to Mt. Shosha. This Shosha mountain itself becomes the precincts of Engyo-ji Temple.

圓教寺は、一千年の歴史を持つ、西の比叡山と呼ばれる天台宗の霊山で由緒ある寺院である。世界に注目されたのが、冒頭に書いたラストサムライのロケ地になり、かなりの場面に登場してからは海外からの観光客が一気に増えたという。

Engyo-ji is a temple that has a history of 1,000 years and is a sacred mountain of the Tendai sect called Mt. Hiei in the west. The world's attention was given to the location of the Last Samurai I wrote at the beginning, and since it appeared in quite a few scenes, the number of tourists from overseas has suddenly increased.

今回、書写山に行く目的は、圓教寺参拝と、圓教寺の塔頭「壽量院」を訪ねることだった。ロープウエーを降り参道を登って行くと最初に見えてくるのが壽量院。ここは精進料理で有名な寺院である。その料理人さんを訪ねた。

This time, the purpose of going to Mt. Shosha was to visit Engyo-ji Temple and to visit the head of the Engyo-ji Temple, "Jyuryo-in". When you get off the ropeway and go up the approach, the first thing you will see is Jyuryo-in. This is a temple famous for vegetarian cuisine. I visited the cook.

壽量院には食器が院内に展示されている。一つのお寺にお茶事に必要な器が数多く展示されているのも珍しい。それは圓教寺だけで使用するお客様用の器や膳すべて「書写塗」という漆仕上げがされている。それだけにお茶事には造詣が深く、お茶事の歴史に圓教寺の存在は大きく刻まれているようだ。

The tableware is displayed in the hospital in the Jyuryo-in. It is rare that one temple displays many vessels needed for tea ceremony. It has a lacquer finish called "Shosha-nuri" for all the containers and sets for customers that are used only at Engyo-ji. For that reason, there is a deep knowledge of tea ceremonies, and the existence of Engyo-ji seems to have been marked in the history of tea ceremonies.

壽量院は国重要文化財の一つで、その昔、全国から集まる天台宗の高僧や公家の宿にもなり、おもてなしをする場所として栄えた。その役割としてその当時の接客用の精進食がいまに伝わったといわれている。

Jyuryo-in was one of the important cultural properties of Japan, and in the olden days, it became an inn for high priests and official residences of the Tendai sect from all over the country, and prospered as a place of hospitality. As its role, it is said that the dietary meal for serving customers at that time has now been introduced.

その圓教寺の壽量院で『精進食』を体験する講座を計画している。作るのはできないにしても、お膳を前に器を楽しみ、精進食を賞味し、料理人の佐藤さんから精進食のうんちくを聞かせていただく、という企画を進めている。
精進食講座については、次回で紹介する予定である。

l am planning a course to experience "Shojin-shoku" at the Jyuryo-in of Engyo-ji Temple. Even if you can't make it, l am planning to enjoy the dishes in front of the table, taste the vegetarian diet, and let the chef, Mr. Sato, tell you about the dish of vegan diet.
We will introduce the dietary education course next time.
