達磨さんの表情っておもしろい。見て飽きないのが、また不思議 !　 　　Daruma's facial expression is interesting. It's strange that you won't get tired of watching it!

“ダ〜ルマさん ダ〜ルマさん 睨めっこしましょーうっぷっぷ ! 笑うと負けよ”
子どもころにこう言いながら遊んだことを思い出す。そのダルマさん(お坊さん)の画が家にあり、たまに床の間に掛けてあった。初めて見たときは、"コワ～" と思ったことを覚えている。

"Da-Luma-san Da-Luma-san glaring at me! Uppup! You lose when you laugh."
I remember playing while saying this when I was a kid. There was a picture of Mr. Dharma (monk) at home, and it was sometimes hung the tokonoma. When I first saw it, I remember thinking " scared !".

達磨さんは彫りが深く目に特徴がある。インド人だから顔も髭も濃い。お釈迦さまの弟子の一人で、中国禅宗の開祖といわれているお坊さんだから日本の禅寺系の寺院にいくと達磨図をよく見かける。
そんな怖い顔でも描いた人によって表情がさまざま。慈悲に溢れた顔と思えば、そう見える。深く修行を積んだ方だから凛々しくも見える。厳しい顔の中に微笑がうかがえる。その違いを見るのが楽しい。なぜか、見ていても飽きないのが、また不思議である。

Daruma san is deep and the eyes are characteristic. He is Indian, so he has a dark face and beard. He is one of the disciples of Buddha and is said to be the founder of the Chinese Zen Buddhism, so when we goes to a Zen temple in Japan, we often see Daruma painting.
Even with such a scary face, the facial expressions vary depending on the person who drew it. If you think of it as a merciful face, it looks like that. He looks dignified because he is a deeply trained person. A smile can be seen in the harsh face. It's fun to see the difference. For some reason, it is strange that I never get tired of looking at it.
