天龍寺に宿る「達磨大師」の表情に惹かれて 　I was attracted to the expression of "Bodhidharma Daishi" in Tenryuji Temple

京都 天龍寺では、拝観受付の正面に達磨図が飾られている。
庫裏の奥にある書院の床間にも達磨図のお軸が掛けられている。

At Tenryu-ji Temple in Kyoto, a Daruma is displayed in front of the reception desk. The axis of the Daruma is also hung between the floors of the Shoin in the back of the kuri. 

筆者は同じ人だと想像はつくが、庫裏の達磨さんは赤の法衣を頭から覆っている。
一方、書院の掛け軸の絵は黄色の法衣である。

I can imagine that I am the same person, but the Daruma in the Kuri covers a red robe from his head.
On the other hand, the picture of the hanging scroll of the Shoin is a yellow robe.

訪ねた際に眺めては手を合わせる。とくに天龍寺の達磨さんはとてもいい表情をされているように思う。
昔から睨めっこする相手が達摩さん。勝てる相手ではないにも必死に厳しい顔を笑わそうと頑張った記憶がある。オバケと達摩さんは怖いものだとインプットされている。

When you visit, look at it and put your hands together. In particular, I think the Daruma of Tenryu-ji has a very nice expression. Daruma has always been a staring contestant.
Although he is not a winning opponent, he remembers trying desperately to laugh at his tough face. It is input that ghosts and Daruma are scary.

大人になって、達摩さんは中国のお坊さんであり、インドから仏教を中国に伝えた偉い僧侶、達摩大師であることを知り、それ以来、厳つい表情を含めファンになっている。

When I became older, he learned that Daruma was a Chinese priest and a great monk who introduced Buddhism from India to China, Bodhidharma Daishi, and since then he has been a fan with a stern look.

天龍寺に掲げてある黄色と赤の袈裟の着ている達磨図は、インドでは僧侶の袈裟は黄色が使用されている。一方、日本の起き上がり小法師としての達磨さんや達磨図のほとんどが赤色を基調とした袈裟が一般的である。
日本では、古来から魔除けとして火の赤がよく使われる。その効果があると信じられていることから、達摩さんのあの怖い顔には “魔除けの僧侶” としての姿が似合い定着した。

In India, the monk's cloth is yellow in the Daruma, which is displayed in Tenryu-ji Temple and is wearing yellow and red cloth.
On the other hand, most of Daruma and Daruma-painting as a Japanese Okiagari-koboshi are generally red-based cloth.
In Japan, fire red has been often used as an amulet since ancient times. Believed to have that effect, Daruma's scary face became a well-established figure as an amulet priest.

そして、もう一つ達磨さんには大きな役割が授けられている。それは、起き上がり小法師の達磨さんである。9年という長い間、面壁坐禅で修業した達磨さんの坐禅姿が倒れても起き上がり小法師に写され、達摩さんは不撓不屈の精神の象徴とされている。

And another big role is given to Daruma. It is the Daruma, a rising koboshi. Even if the zazen figure of the Daruma, who trained in meditation for nine years, collapses, he gets up and is photographed by koboshi, and the Daruma is regarded as a symbol of indomitable spirit.

天龍寺の受付入口の達磨図は、少し苦みばしり、お軸は少し穏やかな表情をされている。筆者は穏やかな方だろうと推測するが、絵のそばにあった木版には達摩図とあり、その横に天龍寺前管長 平田精耕 筆と記してあった。

The Daruma at the reception entrance of Tenryu-ji Temple is a little bitter, and the axis has a slightly calm expression. I presume that he is a calm person, but the woodblock near the picture says Bodhidharma, and next to it is Seiko Hirata, the former president of Tenryu-ji Temple.
