本日は頻出トピックである"教育"についてIELTS講師にライティングを添削していただきました。アカデミックvs実学についてはよく議題に上がりますので、アイデアの整理はしておいた方が良いかもしれません。
 

質問
 It is often said that the subjects taught in schools are too academic in orientation and that it would be more useful for children to learn about practical matters such as home management, work and interpersonal skills.
Do you agree or disagree?

学校で教えられる科目は学問的志向が強すぎ、家庭管理や仕事、対人関係のスキルなど、実践的なことを学ぶほうが子どもたちにとって有益ではないか、とよく言われる。
あなたは賛成ですか、反対ですか？

イントロダクション
It is sometimes argued that schools should provide more practical training than conventional academic subjects.

学校は従来の教科よりも実践的な訓練を提供すべきだと主張されることがある。

In my viewpoint, the benefits of learning academic subjects are greater than that of practical matters in view of expansion of student’s perspectives and fundamental skills.

私の考えでは、生徒の視野や基礎能力を広げるという点で、実技よりも教科を学ぶメリットの方が大きいと考えている。

I concur with this idea because of the following reasons.

私がこの考えに同意するのは、以下の理由からである。

ボディ① 賛成論
Initially, leaning academic disciplines will develop students’ cultural horizons and cultural literacy.
Seemingly, though it seems to be theoretical and useless, it could provide vicarious experience and strengthen their creativity and imagination through studying them.

まず、学問に傾倒することで、生徒の文化的視野と文化的リテラシーが養われる。
一見、理論的で役に立たないように見えるが、学問を学ぶことで身をもって体験し、創造力と想像力を強化することができる。

Additionally,  academic subjects will serve us basic foundation for student’s learning. As a result, it could lead to improving their sensitivity for sympathy and empathy. These can help develop creative ideas and good relationships with others which can be considered as interpersonal skills.

また、教科は生徒の学習の基礎となる。その結果、同情や共感といった感性を磨くことにもつながる。これらは、創造的なアイデアや、対人関係能力ともいえる他者との良好な関係を育むのに役立ちます。

Consequently, it could be helpful for students when they start to work.
その結果、社会人になってからも役立つことでしょう。

ボディ②反対論
On the flip side, critics are doubtful of these benefits and put more importance on practical matters.

その反面、批判的な人々はこれらの利点に疑念を抱き、より現実的な問題を重視している。

As society has become matured and complexed, more companies have become increasingly competitive and desperate to look for highly skilled workers. Moreover, low birth rate and increasing aging society have fueled this situation.
In this context, they insist that academic subjects would not be immediately useful and schools have also been required to review their curriculums to include practical subjects to meet companies demands.

社会が成熟し、複雑化するにつれて、より多くの企業が競争を激化させ、高度な技術を持つ労働者を必死に探すようになった。さらに、少子高齢化もこの状況に拍車をかけている。
このような状況の中で、学問はすぐには役に立たないと主張し、学校も企業の需要に応えるため、実践的な科目を取り入れたカリキュラムに見直すことが求められている。

個人の意見
Considering pros and cons, it is true that practical skills are need in our lives but I think putting importance on academic subjects is more beneficial, mainly because of the basic foundation it can provide to students’ education.

賛否両論を考慮すると、実践的なスキルが私たちの生活に必要なのは事実だが、学問的な科目を重視する方が有益だと思う。

結論
In conclusion, as I mentioned above, even though there are several arguments that students should learn practical matters, I totally agree with the idea that studying academic subjects can bring about advantages in broadening your perspectives and consequently being helpful in work.

結論として、前述のように、学生が実務を学ぶべきだという議論はいくつかあるにせよ、学問を学ぶことで視野が広がり、結果的に仕事に役立つという考えには全面的に賛成である。
