ナンテン（夏バージョン）もご注目あれ

雨が多くなって梅雨入りが秒読みになってくる頃、そこここに咲く紫陽花の華やかでしっとりした青に目を奪われていると、うっかり見過ごしてしまうのが、控えめなナンテンの花。

白く清楚に咲いている割に、なんか地味。
庭木として玄関先や門の横などに植えている人も多いので、結構な頻度で出くわすのに、ほとんど誰もナンテンの花を知らない。というか、そもそもその白い花＝ナンテン、だとは結びつかないのかもしれない。

ウェブサイトでナンテンの生態を調べていても、「花の観賞価値はあまりない」なんて、あからさまに書いてあって、ちょっと可哀想な気さえする。

でも、本当にそうかしら？
春の花が終わって、初夏に向けて緑の色が日に日に濃くなるこの時期、梅雨を予感させる曇り空や、しとしと降る雨の日に、優しいクリームがかった白い花を円錐状に咲かせる姿は、優しげで好きなんだけどな。

もちろん冬の真っ赤な果実の色彩は素晴らしく、ナンテンと言えばまずその艶やかな鈴なりの実を思い出す人がほとんどでしょう。
昔は、お正月飾りとして葉牡丹や福寿草と一緒に鉢植えの状態（根が張ったまま）で床の間に飾る風習もあったそう。なんせ「難を転じて福をなす」とされる縁起物の代表的存在ですからね。

ナンテンの実を、お正月のしめ縄飾りに使っているのも見かけますよね。ポロポロと落ちてしまう実も、一旦くくりつけて飾ってしまえば、水がなくても結構長持ちするんですよ。

乾燥させたナンテンの実は、和薬として長年用いられています。漢方薬が中国発なのに対し、和薬は純ジャパの植物薬です。ちなみにナンテンの実は咳止めに効果があるそうです。

また、ナンテンの葉は、料理のあしらいに使われています。え？どんなのだっけ？と思う方は、キーワード検索で、「ナンテン＋料理＋飾り」で調べてみてください。造花バージョンもネット販売されているほど、飾り葉の代表格です。贈答用のお赤飯の上にちょこんと乗せられている、あの葉です。見ための美しさだけでなく、笹の葉などと同様に、殺菌力があるとされています。　

また、縁起が良いうえに材質が硬いのでお箸の材料に活用されており、赤ちゃんのお食い初めの際にナンテンの箸を使うと良い、と言われています。

時代を遡ってみても、ナンテンは強運を呼び込むアイテムでした。武士が出陣前に床に差して、戦の勝利を祈願するためにも使われていたそうです。

そんな、験担ぎにぴったりな花言葉を持つナンテン。
それは、「福をなす」です。

揚げ物をしていたら、油がはねて、なんと目を直撃。灼熱の異物の直撃に、私のまぶたは素早く反応して閉じたものの、、、油の方が一歩早かったのでした。ですが、素晴らしいことに、コンタクトレンズが角膜を守っていたのです（感涙）！こんなこともあるのですね〜。皆さんも、油を使うときは気をつけてくださいね！


As the rainy season approaches and the vibrant, moist blue of blooming hydrangeas catches our eyes, it's easy to overlook the modest flowers of the Nandina.
Despite their pristine white appearance, they are somewhat unremarkable. Many people plant Nandina trees in their gardens, often near the entrance or gate, so you encounter them frequently. Yet, almost no one knows the Nandina flower or associates the white blooms with the Nandina plant.
Even when researching Nandina online, you often find phrases like "the flowers have little ornamental value," which seems a bit unfair.

But is that really true? During this period, as the green color deepens day by day toward early summer, the soft, cream-colored flowers blooming in cone shapes under cloudy skies or gentle rain are delicate and charming, at least to me.

Of course, the vibrant red berries in winter are splendid, and most people think of those when they hear "Nandina." In the past, it was customary to decorate the alcove with potted Nandina plants (with roots) along with ornamental cabbages and fukujusou for New Year's. This is because the Nandina is considered a symbol of good luck, believed to "turn difficulties into blessings."

You might also see Nandina berries used in New Year’s rope decorations. Even if the berries fall off, once they are tied and displayed, they last quite long without water.

Dried Nandina berries have been used as traditional Japanese medicine for many years. Unlike Chinese herbal medicine, Japanese medicine uses purely Japanese plants. Incidentally, Nandina berries are said to be effective against coughs.

Additionally, Nandina leaves are used as garnishes in cooking. If you're wondering what they look like, search for "Nandina + cooking + garnish." They are so popular as decorative leaves that even artificial versions are sold online. They are the leaves placed on top of celebratory red rice. These leaves are not only visually appealing but are also believed to have antibacterial properties, similar to bamboo leaves.

Moreover, because they are considered lucky and the material is hard, Nandina wood is used to make chopsticks. It is said to be good to use Nandina chopsticks for a baby's first meal celebration.
Going back in history, the Nandina was also considered a lucky charm. Samurai used to place it on the floor before going to battle to pray for victory.

The Nandina has a fitting flower language for a plant associated with good luck. Its flower language is "to bring good fortune."

While frying food, some oil splashed and hit my eye. Although my eyelid quickly shut in response to the burning hot foreign object, the oil was a bit faster.
