世の中には、いろんなライバルがいます。
宿命のライバルのしのぎを削る戦いは
感動的なドラマが生まれます。
しかし、「よくやるよ」
とあきれて笑われるライバルもいます。
沢木君と津野君は、中学校１年生の時に
同じクラスになってからのライバルです。
ほとんど、互いに話をしようとはしません。
何のライバルかって、アマチュア将棋のライバルなのです。
最初は、紙の上に書いた将棋盤や磁石で作った駒で
休憩時間にやっていたのですが、そのうちに
授業中もやるようになったのです。
まさか授業中に将棋盤をはさんで対局するわけには
いきませんので、目隠し将棋をします。二人とも
寝ても覚めても将棋を指していますので、頭の中に
将棋盤があるのです。授業中に「５五銀」とか
「王手」と書いたメモを交換しているだけですので、
ちょっと見ただけでは分かりません。先生も
冗談を言っても二人だけは難しい顔をしているので
不思議だったでしょう。かと思えば、涙を流さんばかりに
悔しがったり笑ったりします。同じ事をしているようですが
津野君は学年でも５本の指に入るほど優秀なのに
沢木君は、おちょこちょいで女好きであります・・・
それぞれの家に帰っても、二人は対局をしています。
制限時間なんてありませんので、１日に１手しか
進まないことがあります。やっと次の一手を決めて
沢木君が津野君の家に電話をするとお母さんがでます。
「はい、津野でございます」
「もしもし、沢木ですが。いますか？」
「あら、沢木君・・いつも、お世話になちゃって
元気でやってる？・・・今・・お風呂・・すぐ出るからね
沢木君よ・・・ちょっと、待ってね」
「はい」
「ところで、中間テストの数学むずかしかったのねえ。
うちの子もだめだったのよ・・・もう、クヤしくって
お母さん元気・・・よろしくね・・・それはそうと・・・」
とおしゃべりの津野君のお母さんと１０分ほど話していると
お風呂に入っていた津野君が出てきて

とだけ言って電話を切るのです。たまに、沢木君はあまりにも
津野君のお母さんと長話をしたために苦労して勉強もしないで
考えた次の一手を忘れてしまうこともあったそうです。
ちなみに、津野君は同じような状況になっても冷静に
「あとで電話します」
と言ってかけ直すのは今も変わらないことです。
その後、中学高校と同じクラスになることはありませんでしたが、
電話対局や道ですれ違いざまに互いに眉間にしわを寄せて
「２四歩」
「何！ムムムムム」
とか言葉を交わしながらライバル関係は続きました。
ところで、ムムムムムム・・・と言うのは、いつも沢木君です。
現在、津野君は、優秀な成績で大学を卒業し
中学の名物教師になっています。
一方の沢木君は６浪の末に大学に入学し、
２９歳の時に補助教員として小学校の先生になりました。
立場はちがっても、今でもライバル関係は続いています。
変わったのは、沢木君が津野君の家に電話をかけると
津野君の奥さんが出ることです。会話は変わりません。
「今、お風呂・・・あなた・・沢木さんよ
申し訳ありませんね・・・いつも、お待たせして・・・
ところで・・・」
こんな具合におしゃべりの津野君の奥さんと１０分か１５分、
話をして待たされるのは、いつも沢木君です。
時々、次の一手を忘れるのも沢木君です。
ちなみに戦績ですが、
昨夜の時点で津野君２３９０勝で沢木君３２４勝です。
ただいま津野君７９連勝中だそうです。
ちなみに津野君は中学の時に全国大会で２位になり
プロ入りの話もあったほどの達人です。

瞳は、一つ年下の妹の加奈子とは何でも話し合える仲だった。
二人っきりの姉妹で、
まるで家の中に友達でもいるような感じだった。
休みの日には、二人で自転車に乗って家から１０分くらい
走った所にある浜辺で、ビーチバレーをして遊んだものだ。
　
瞳が２０になった頃だった。
就職も内定した夏休みの日、同じ短大で１年下の
加奈子といっしょに浜辺でビーチバレーをしていた。
少し離れた所では、近所の製鉄所の寮の若い男子社員たちが
バレーボールをしている。瞳たちは彼らとは顔なじみで、
メンバーが足らないときには臨時のメンバーに加わる事もある。
そんな彼らとは別に少し離れたところで、
ギターを弾いている若い社員もいた。
他の同僚とは離れて、ひとり遠くの海を眺めながら
ムードある曲をきままに奏でている人だった。
彼は立木啓介と言って、製鉄所の中にできた
コンピューター会社の社員だった。
何度か、取り損ねたボールを拾って投げてもらうこともあって
瞳も加奈子も気軽に立木と話をするようになった。

と話題が加奈子に集中すると、
少し白けた瞳はタイミングを見計らって
立木の側に駆け寄った。

「放っといたら、とられちゃいますよ」

その日から加奈子と立木は交際を始めた。

立木は両親と会い、めでたく婚約となった。
真面目で律儀な性格の立木を両親も気に入ったようだ。

妹の婚約を顔で祝福しながら、
瞳は加奈子には絶対に言えない秘密を
自分の心の中に発見した。
