この歌詞についてネット上にあった解釈を3つ見てみる。
1つ目はこれは「死」に関する物語だと言うもの。
何故ならば、死は "早かれ遅かれ" 不可避なものであり
死後の世界こそ "The Unkwon"なものであり、
同時に恐らくキリスト教的世界観では死後=天国で 私たちはそこで地上の家族や知人と再開するから You will come back to meである。

I think this song is all about death.
That is, "The Unknown" - what comes after death?
The singer is singing to the person he has lost in life, and how he will meet them again in the after life, when he dies.
"After the people and places are gone" are the people and places of this world. Once they are gone, that is, once the singer dies, "You will come back to me" he will reunite with his family.

"Sooner or later it all comes around" - death is inevitable. The singer acknowledges this. But in my view, he is not afraid to die.

二つ目は「happiness」についてだと言うもの。これは共感がむずかしいな。英語圏では幸せの色は紫なのかな？

In an exclusive interview, Dan says “The Unknown” is about “questioning the future, and about my grandfather, who passed away years ago. He was one of the most humble, funny and hardworking men I’ve ever known.”

The song was largely inspired by the passing of Dan’s grandfather. The connections between him and the song explicitly appear when he mentions his “papa” and the recurring theme of death.

In an interview with USA Today, Dan recollects his legacy, “He was one of the most humble, funny and hardworking men I’ve ever known.”
