かつて常陸国の地に住む土地神でありながら、二度に渡って人間との争いに敗れ追放された蛇神｢夜刀神ヤトノカミ｣。住処を追われ、愛宕神社に邪神として封印されたヤトノカミは、人間への恨みを募らせながら復讐の時を待っていた。
時は流れ21世紀、環境破壊や地域紛争、長びく不況により、世界中に負のエネルギーが充満した。人心の荒廃は土地の地場力を弱め、封印が緩んだ隙をついてヤトノカミがついに復活、神として一度は祀り上げておきながら、信心を忘れた身勝手な人間への憎悪をさらに滾らせつつ、復讐のため世界に永遠の夜をもたらすべく破壊の限りを尽くす。これを食い止めるべく笠間市の笠間稲荷神社から、狐の四兄弟の魂を宿した守護神獣が出現、両者は中間地点の小美玉市で激突し、守護神と邪神、神と神との壮絶な死闘が幕を開ける。しかし千年以上にわたって蓄積した怨念のパワーは凄まじく、さすがの守護神獣も苦戦を強いられる。万事休すかと思われたその時、愛宕神社からご利益を授かった行方の市民達が集結、ヤトノカミに向かって感謝を述べはじめた。
