土浦城のお堀に突如巨大なハスが出現、急激に成長し巨大な蕾を付け始めた。何事かと人々が驚き恐慄く中、巨大ハスを見つめる一人の少女がいた。｢ついに来たのね。この時が…｣

蓮実千里は不思議な少女だった。幼い頃から明日の天気やテストの範囲、事件や事故、災害など、これから起こる出来事をことごとく言い当て、周囲からは｢千里眼の千里ちゃん｣と呼ばれていた。彼女の事を気味悪がる人も当然いたが、そんな心の内も見透かしているような彼女に強気に出られる者はおらず、また人当たりの良い彼女を表立って悪くいう者もいなかった。クラスメートの根津もその一人だった。根っからのオカルト否定派である彼は千里眼など信じていなかったが、行方不明になった妹を千里に見つけてもらって以来、信じないわけにはいかなくなったのだ。信じたくない自分と信じざるを得ない現実の間で葛藤するほど、自分の中で千里の存在が大きくなっていく。
｢それだけ先が見えるなら、道に迷ったり悩んだりなんかしないだろうね｣昼食時に皮肉混じりに根津が言うと、千里は弁当のきんぴらをつつきながら、いつも通り飄々と答えた。
｢未来が見えてたとしても道が一つとは限らないわ。通ってきた道が違えば同じ未来でも違って見えるかもしれない。このれんこんのようにね｣千里はれんこんの穴を通して根津を覗くと、口に放り込んだ。
｢君は一体何者なの？｣意を決して根津は尋ねた。
千里は質問には答えず、代わりにこう返した。
｢先の見えない未来はないわ。ただ見られる事を望まない未来があって、見る事を望まない人がいるだけ｣

巨大ハスは成長を続け、ついに巨大な花を咲かせた。巨大ハスの撤去が決定し、焼却のため自衛隊が出動すると、レンコン畑の泥の中から巨大な怪獣が出現、巨大ハスを守るように、自衛隊の前に立ちはだかった。迎え撃つ自衛隊だったが、体中の穴からビームや光弾を乱射する圧倒的な火力と、千里眼による百発百中の命中精度を持つ怪獣の前に歯が立たない。
｢ついに来たのね。この時が…｣巨大ハスに向かって歩きだす千里を、背後から呼び止める根津。
｢蓮実さん、ぼくはまだ答えを聞いてない｣
｢わたしは遥か昔、あの大ハスの種子と共にこの星にやって来た。｣

｢わたしは転生を繰り返しながら、この時を千年待っていた。土浦城を作らせ、歴代の城主に仕えてこの千里眼で未来を見通して、歴史の影から大ハスを守ってきた。そしてこの星でハスは十分に繁栄した。後はまた新たな星に向けて種子を打ち上げるだけ。わたしはそれと一緒に行かなければならないの｣

｢大丈夫。わたしはもう未来を見てる。この街の、この星の未来は明るい。生きにくい時代かもしれないけれど、泥の中にも美しいハスの花が咲いて、美味しいれんこんができるように｣
やがて千里と巨大ハスは光の柱に包まれると宇宙へ飛び立って行き、怪獣も再び泥の中で眠りについたのだった。
