今回より数回、コロナウイルスと闘うための有効な手段 "social distancing"  について扱った Youtube 動画の英語字幕の英文テクストを解説します。
この動画は、もともと 論説記事サイト The Conversation に掲載された記事内容を、画像をつけて分かりやすく簡潔に要約したものです。
今回は、そのうち第１パラグラフ本文を扱います。

social distancingに関する英文テクストを取り上げるにあたって

"social distancing" に関しては、海外では既に先月ぐらいから社会と人々が共に強い意識を持ち徹底して"social distancing"を実践している光景を海外メディアのニュースで拝見してきました。
一方、日本でも、ようやく、この非常事態宣言が出されて以降ぐらいから、一部のスーパーマーケットなどでは他の買い物客との間隔をあけるようにアナウンスや掲示がされたり、レジの順番を待つ買い物客が間隔を空けて並ぶように足元に一定間隔ごとにテープが貼られたりするなど、徐々に意識して実行されるようになってきました。
しかし、日本では、止むを得ない外出時における人々の"social distancing"に対する意識が、欧米に比べるとまだまだ薄いのではないかという問題意識を私は持っております。少なくとも、私の地元の大阪府内中核市の中心部や住宅街で見ている限りでは、週末の混み合ったスーパーマーケットなどでは、相変わらず買い物客同士の間隔が狭くなっていることがよくあり、レジに並んで待つ買い物客の列の間隔、並び方もそれほど目立って大きくは変わっていないような印象を受けます。日増しに感染者数が増加し、この傾向を食い止めないと、１ヶ月後には、今の欧米の状況に近いほどの被害をもたらす可能性すら否定できないかもしれません。日本では、特に、止むを得ない外出時において、人々が危機意識を持って"social distancing"を実践することが急務であると思います。
そこで、私は、"social distancing"の定義、重要性、その意図するところを分かりやすく紹介した英文テクストで、かつ、２次使用が可能なものがないか探しました。今回からの"social distancing"に関する一連の英文テクスト解説記事ではその内容にも是非注目して少しでも"social distancing"に対する意識を深めて頂ければ幸いです。

What is social distancing?
Social distancing is a tool public health officials can use to slow the spread of a disease that is being passed from person to person.  The CDC describes social distancing as staying away from mass gatherings and keeping a distance of 6 feet or 2 meters from other people.  At the moment, this is one of the most important tools available to fight the spread of the coronavirus. Experts estimate that a vaccine is 12 to 18 months away.  Some examples of social distancing are closing schools, closing theatres and working from home.  But social distancing also means not touching other people, and that includes handshakes.  The goal is to keep the number of cases at any one time below the capacity of the healthcare system. This is what people mean when they say social distancing can “flatten the curve.”

まず、タイトルの意味です。
social distancing という用語に関しては、「社会的距離(戦略)」などと訳されていることがありますが、ここでは、専門用語として、訳さずに英語のままにしておきます。

文ではありません。
